Usually every year at the theater in my town there's a showing of the new Warren Miller film. but this year they aint doing it for some reason..

I know warren miller is not the fave ski media here and its def not my fave either, but the vibe of the yearly showing was always so fun, they had giveaways and shit from local shops and I have been going to this since I was like 13 and am really gonna miss getting blazed with my dad and watching high dollar ski shots

Nothing wrong with liking Warren Miller. I think part of the reason they get hate is that Warren sold WME and then WME went after Level 1 (I believe?) financially for using Warren’s voice. It got so bad that Warren himself had to step in and say to Warren Miller entertainment “come on guys, knock it off”.

Granted this is going off memory so maybe I got some parts wrong

Bro Warren Miller to the grandfather OG of all of it. That sounds dope.

Sure, but Warren Miller is dead now, and his son sold the company, along with the rights to Warren's voice. Then turned around and sued Level 1 for using Warren Miller. Warren was an amazing guy, but his legacy named company is not so amazing.

uh, just spitballing here but level1 making money from the movie they used Miller's his voice in without permission? And if so, was there a compelling reason level1 didn't get a license to use it?

nah but for real that does suck.

I'm thinking they didn't even think about it because they didn't use clips but recorded clips with him talking personally and privately for the movie. Warren is a fuckin g and if you haven't seen level 1's 10th movie I suggest you check it. First off it's one of their best movies imo and secondly Warren Miller was like sayin the dopest old dude shit in it! To me he was more inspirational in that flick then any of his own that I've seen

Josh went to his house and recorded voiceover with him intended for our movie. This was all when he was alive. WME sued us because they alleged he had sold his likeness to them when he sold the company. Warren eventually became a defendant with us and was being sued by his own company.

Damn that’s wild. Sounds like WME was just seeing red

If WME isn't doing events in your town anymore, put your own on! Some friends and I raised a tiny bit of money and put on a couple PBP screenings a handful of years ago back when that was a thing, and it was really easy. Reach out to some local or smaller crews that are putting out a movie this year and a little local theater or auditorium and make an event. Even if it's just a small screening you won't regret it.

If you want to see a aki movie see if you can gather some support, talk to a shop get a premier going. It doesn't have to be anything crazy. We've had small premier parties at bars at ski areas. Shops do them a bunch

See whats around.

Also as far as the Warren Miller movies, fuck all of that. They fucked over Warren Miller the man hard. The movies have nothing to do with him, they're generally generic ass ski movies that feel like a commercial in parts. It's cool to get people together and watch a movie, but WME and thier movies are trash.

Get some friends together, talk to the local shop, talk to the local mtn/park crew etc. Get a premier of a better movie by skiers for skiers.

WME can go fuck themselves.

Put something together with your friends. Post a bunch of flyers on business doors and shop doors. I’m sure the local shops will sponsor some merch if you put it together. Just need a projector place to do it (outside is easiest) and make it byof/byob invite some local vendors or bands to play. People get way more stoked on community events when they see effort by someone doing something for all. Definitely lots of work no doubt but could be incredibly rewarding.

This is pretty accurate and I would say shifted the view of a lot of NSers on here when the “big dog” of the old ski industry went after our beloved level 1

The freeride club when I was in college did this. It was always a really good time.

I love going to all the ski movies each year. From small local shows to big-budget ones. I'm hyped for the MSP Palisades show tonight.

But man, WME has been so damn boring and corporate the last few years. How can films about skiing suck the soul out of the sport? The advertising for car brands or resorts is so blatant. They're supposed to be the movie that you can invite your parents or kids to. But I wouldn't do that anymore. Last year was so boring that I decided I'm done with the annual WME movie. I'll spend my money somewhere else.

The OG Warren Miller movies had so much charm and soul. He could make people unloading from a chairlift fun to watch. Today, it's all about " Wow guys, I'm driving my brand new 2023 Toyota Sequoia® to a little unknown spot called Sun Valley Ski Resort®. I love Sun Valley Ski Resort® because of all the terrain I can ride on my Rossignol® Blackops 98."

I still remember like it was yesterday when this went down. It was such a slap in the face to you guys and anyone who loves skiing.

Had no idea this was true, just got the feeling from being on here warren miller had some really bad wrap. seems like a good guy to do that. Even happier I found this out. Crazy

For what it’s worth: the only ski movie premiere in Minneapolis from the “big three ski films that your dad likes” appears to be MSP this year. What the hell? WME has had a film here since I started skiing (22 years ago), and I can’t believe TGR doesn’t have a premiere in Minneapolis. Despite a good number of ikon, mountain collective, and epic pass buyers being from this area I am very upset that the large ski movie scene hasn’t stepped up and continued showing here
