Buying a Ukulele...

Hey guys, ive been playing guitar and piano for a while (first grade), and really started focusing on guitar in the past couple of years and i've been kind of itching to get a uke. If anyone on here could point me in the right direction on what to buy and stuff like that it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

What to buy? Well, if you're buying a ukulele you will also want a pair of cowboy boots, a velvet vest, a handkerchief for your back pocket, a Mazda Miata, and a giant tub of vasoline.

^ hahahahaha, i am just picturing IZ singing "what a wonderful world" in the outfit you described

this is ukelele russ, he is a local musician here and he is pretty hilarious. sorry im not being more helpful to the OP

irrelevant

Make sure you buy something made of koa wood, even though you might notice a difference at first it will soon become important. Live ukulele.com is a good resource. Where are you located? I know good shops in wa and hi.

I got one for about $20 off craigslist. It is real koa wood. I don't remember what brand it is but I would just find the cheapest non painted toy one you can.

i see what youre trying to do here but unfortunately ukelele doesnt really fall into the whole gay cowboy theme like you seem to think it does... trying too hard

anyways OP i have a normal uke but ive always sorta wished it was a baritone uke instead. theyre pretty cool and IMO more versatile than normal ukelele

OP I would just go to your local music store and purchase a beginner uke for like $60. Even though you've had experience with playing guitar, this will give you a general feel of whether or not you want to invest more of your money into a better quality instrument. It also gives you a uke that you can bring to the beach and get sand in or drop on the ground and crack without crying over it.

I bought one at a goodwill when I was hammered for 30 bucks. Now whenever I know someones getting lucky in my house, I play La Bomba outside their door. Shits cash.

Oh yeah, make sure you get a concert or tenor sized uke. Wider range of notes and you won't be an uke gaper.

i live in illinois, haha but what is so special about koa vs any other wood besides the fact that its like 4000$ more expensive? is it the sound?

Koa has a much brighter and cleaner sound.

Bump.

Looking to get a uke. Probably a concert or tenor. I know a few songs, but still a beginner.

Any recommendations?

I just got one a month ago, guitar center has a decent selection with varying prices. I would say get a concert one because most of the tutorials are geared towards concert ukes. Don't cheap out either, if you get a cheaper one you'll have alot of trouble keeping it in tune.

Yeah I'm definitely getting either a concert or tenor, I like a slightly bigger uke haha. Might have to take a trip down to the gutter center, but I've been looking on craigslist and KSL too

I bought a ukulele in mexico because I couldnt find a bathroom and needed something to shit into. pretty sure thats about all they are good for anyways though

Seems like it would get boring after like an hour. On a side note I was getting the mail one day and found a mini 6 string acoustic laying on the side of the road. So I grabbed it. Seems like a better option than a 4 string ukulele you can play normally
