ya my friend just got one and he is absolutely obsessed with it. Its a cool car but it gets shitty gas milage and weird things go wrong with it. Unless you are gunna be going off road it doesnt make too much sense. But if you want that whole land rover mystique then it is a good car.

for the last month, i've been searching for a car, and I pretty much had my heart set on a discovery. I think (and still think) they are incredibly sick, and I imagine I'll buy a land rover at some point in my life.
That said, I did a ton of research, ton of shopping, lots of asking around (with friends who had land rovers and stuff like that), and in the end I didn't get one now because they are incredibly bloody expensive to fix. The key with them is to keep shit in good shape, everything lubed up properly, regular tune ups, etc, and they'll last like a fiend. Gas mileage sucks but whatever, it's just when shit goes bad, it can be just nasty expensive.Even the little things can be a bitch.

Like many people have already said, the service and repair fees are going to eat you alive. Unless you are very financially secure and are wanting to shell out thousands of dollars for parts, service (and gas!), don't buy one.
This being said, they are quite badass and certainly make a statement. You'd be better off buying Jeep 4.0 or something...

The funny thing is, they are AMAZING offroad. Because of their size and Toyota's designs this is a great offroad vehicle. I have a feeling your truck is American. So I'm sure after you bag on this car, the person driving it will be laughing when your truck is in the repair shop twice as much. So GTFO.

LR's truely are amazing offroad. Definitely more than a jeep, toyota, anything...
The lockers/gear ratios/air suspension are all sick and make an awesome combo offroad if you know what you're doing

I find the Range Rover an amazing car, but that being said, their maintenance is ridiculous, they are really damaging to the environment, and your (college) wallet will be empty every time you fill it up.

ha jeeps are overrated, they are a good platform to build off, but in my experience, when they are somewhat close to stock, they really arent that . ive got a friend with a liberty, he's put about 6 or 7 grand into it, and a friend with a wrangler, he put about 4 grand into it, and my friend with a stock landcruiser and bigger tires destroy's them. if the fj is anywhere near a landcruiser it probably does extremely well.

probably a good choice, get a dub. they need fixing sometimes but they have a drivetrain as strong as thors hammer. theyll easily go 200k +

I honestly find that a little hard to believe. I don't know about the liberty nor what the 6k went to. But My friend next door has a Discovery II with larger tires and yes the thing is a fucking beast. Plows through shit like you can't imagine. But a JK or older wrangler with 4 grand in it vs. a Discovery II with larger tires..... I don't think the Land Rover would destroy it. Also they are slow as balls (discovery)
Still if you are looking at that type of car, a Jeep Grand Cherokee is bamf, large engine, easy to mod, will get you where you need to go.

lr2's are pretty good. i used to own one expensive, but a fucking beastly tank car.
alternator went, air suspension went (so i just put on springs), other than the usual upkeep on it, it wasn't too bad.
keep it in good shape and the car willl return the favor.
