Bumming @ whistler

I've heard bumming at whistler is quite a challenge these days, and most of you guys probably don't want to give away too many secrets. however, it'd be really helpful if anyone could give me some insight on how hard it'll be to find a place to park my truck to sleep in overnight. I plan on driving up from Kamloops and staying at whis on weekends as ill be going to school in kamloops.

from what i remember there isn't one in whis, closest would be squamish or pemberton. thanks for the reply though man.

any locals willing to give me some advice?

cheakamus crossing has some good empty lots n shit where ive seen people car camp for a couple nights. pretty low traffic area, just be quiet and stealth and you should be alright.

depends on what is your plan....

i stayed in parking 4 in my car all last summer but you have to hide yourself when you sleep cause they do check and if they spot you they will give you a fine. other than that, you can easily park your car in residential roads (bayshores, nordic, etc.) and be good for a couple of days.

Totally depends on the time of year. The winter is tricky as they dont allow overnight parking in the day lots and much more of the residental roads are closed for plowing. The spring time isn't a problem as long as you don't crash in a stupidly obvious spots and rotate where you sleep regularly. Just an FYI Kamloops weekend trips to Whis seems pretty far, I would say your time might be better skiing in the interior.

@Download-My-Apps you might be right, but heres my logic

sunpeaks is an hour away, revelstoke is 3 and whistler is 4. a pass is about the same at all three mountains.

if i'm spending 500 ish on a pass i figure i might as well get my moneys worth at a bigger mountain which is why i'm kind of ruling out sun peaks. i think whistler is worth the extra hour, but if revelstoke would be easier to find a place to camp that might tip the scales. hopefully i can plan my classes so that i end up spending more than two days a week at the mountain (if everything works out i could do 4 days) plus i'm moving from ontario so 3 or 4 hours doesn't seem so bad. I realize i didn't really pick the most ideal school as kamloops isn't really in a mountain range, but ill be switching to ubc next year so this is only temporary.

thoughts anyone?

What kind of skiing are you looking for? What will you be studying?

No matter where you go, staying in your car will have its challenges, specifically in the in the cold.

Sun Peaks when compared to other resorts in BC is fairly modest, but will still be bigger than most places in Ontario. The park is decent, fairly run of the mill. Looking back to my first year of uni there is no way I could have travelled 4 hours on regular basis to ski. So having it has a local hill for day trips is a bonus.

I have yet to ski Revelstoke, but from my understanding it trumps Whistler in terms of snow quality, terrain and lack of crowds.

Whistler is awesome, but fucking crowded on powder days and holidays. It takes at least a season to know the place well, unless you know some people that like to share. Overall, park & skiing it will meet all your needs. But it is quite the journey from Kamloops. You will pay off your pass no doubt, but it will be quality not quantity.

i'm mostly looking for big mountain skiing, I prefer natural features over park. I also want a mountain with a good scene, with skiers and filmers i can learn from. Im not necessarily looking to get sponsored, but i do want to progress as both a filmer and skier as well as make some industry contacts. I want to be at the center of the action which why i'm leaning towards whistler. I'm very passionate about skiing so i want to fit the ski bum lifestyle in with studying.

BA, studying philosophy so my course load won't be too bad compared to a science degree and i'm a solid student so i think i'll be able to make it work. I understand it'll be a pretty tough season, but i'm committed to getting a lot of skiing in even if i only ending up having time for skiing and school. Also i plan on bringing a diesel truck out which will be able to handle putting on a ton of km's.

they actually go there with a sled because everything inbound at revy is really not the best.

If you're switching to ubc next year then go this year at revi and next year at whis so you get to experience both
