Bum Across America

I want to sometime in my life "bum" across America with just like a backpack full of stuff and walk/train hop from east coast to west coast. I would start in Virginia or North Carolina and make it to California. Any advice?

watch out for train yard guards. had a couple buddies get arrested for train hopping in lubbock, tx, and spend several days in a SKETCHY jail.carry a good knife, and probably some pepper spray.write the next great american novel when you're done

I have a friend that did this, he didn't know if he wanted to go to college or just start working for the rest of his life. So he loaded up a backpack with a few books, some clothes and a Smith's tape. He made it from Washington to around Virginia then back home. He has a lot of crazy stories from other bums he met and such. I think it would be worth doing, just be smart about it and don't get yourself killed.
