building rail/box

If your making a box, plexiglass in an option. it doesnt hold up as well in the cold weather and will eventually crack and break over time.. Lexan is the best material you could use and you can (supposedly) pick it up at Home Depot or Lowes..

If your building a rail, you can go with either pvc or metal.. Pvc slides awesome and lots of people prefer it over metal. Also, pvc is cheaper but doesnt hold up AS well as metal does. If you go with pvc, you can make the base out of wood or anything you'd like.

When using PVC for a rail how do you attach it to the base.

Im thinkning 8' double 2' PVC to a 2x4.

If i screw in to the PVC from below will they not tear out when you slide.

Anybody got any tips on a better way to do this.

i have a pvc rail but t sucks and im main a new one. just wondering if that liquid nails stuff actually works o will the pvc just rip off the wood

liquid nails wont do shit for attaching the PVC to anything. I've never built one, but why not drill a small 1/4' hole in the top, and then use an extension for your drill and screw it through the bottom to whatever is your base...You can always fill the top hole with something else.

if you're going to use pvc for a rail i suggest you drill holes in the top of the rail and put screws in from there to the base which in this case is 2x4s...

what about bending pvc to like if you want a rainbow box could you take like 3 smaller pvc pipes place them side by side to do this can you bend em?

 
Form ply for a narower box (1 foot wide) its just wood with a special coating it and works really well.

i tihnk im going to make mine out of pvc piping, just double 2 up. or someone found like a plastic deck railing or something you can buy? just go to home depot and look around,

I just bought Six 3/4 inch pvc pipes and a big ass sheet of Lexan from Home depot. It all cost $100 and with it i'll be able to build two ten foot rails using three 3/4 pvc. And with the lexan Im gonna make a twelve foot long box thats 1 1/2 feet wide its gonna have one 2 inch pvc on each side its gonna be soo hot! I'll post pics when I finish it. Lexan Is the expensive part it was $75 for a 6'x3'x.05' peice its so flexible though and 250 times stronger then glass. (THats what it said on the package.)

OOOH how about making a box out of pvc? Just screw like four next to each other or something, that sounds like it might work, and I think I've seen a picture of it somewhere...

 
y doesnt anyone just drill up through the 2x4 into the pvc, thats what I always do and it works fine, and i dont have holes in the top of my rail

 
unless your only going to slide boxes side ways then you cant make boxs out of small pvc pipes. when you spin you edge or entire ski would likely fall into the groove. It would work on small spins but if you tryin some serious spinnin on the box youll fall every time. JUst get a PVC sheet same matierial but completly flat. Way cheaper easier safer just better. Get LExan if you can afford it

Plexiglass is very easy to cut if you have the right tool to do it. I had to cut a 6 X 3 foot sheet in half down the middle and the cut is smooth and straight. You can get tools that have like a hook on them made for cutting it.

 
yeah I forgot that one but LExan is by far the best its is hella strong many resorts dont even use it cause its too pricy. THats when you find rips and gouges in the surface which will through you. when I was in HOme depot Before I was sure lexan was the best stuff I took out a pocket knife and went to work on the stuff. No scratches! I look close and could see where I was scratching but nothin that would affect its rideing. plexiglass is real good to not as tuff but still good. The LExan cost me $75 for a 3'x6' section so its real expensive. Me and three friends all put in so its no soo mad. I need info on how to make a strong structure. I am planning to abuse this box.

 
ok, you've got a 3x6 (in feet) sheet of lexan. rip that in half, so now you have two 1.5x6 sheets. then you're going to get a bunch of 2x4 boards, and build the box. think about it, 4 long rails running on each 4 'corners' of the long box. then brace them together. put plywood inbetween the boards on the top, and then brace the plywood from underneath. slap the lexan on top, drill & countersink holes (this will put the screws below the surface level of the lexan, so you can't catch them) into the lexan, screw in the screws, and you're set.

thanks alot I am using a glue to attach the lexan cause its only .05 INches think so you can put a screw into it. If you have pictures or a more detailed description that would be great but I think I'll figure some way to make it work nice. Im also gonna put two PVC rails onto each edge of the box which will make it wider and create more possibilities.
