Building a bike

Hello gals! I'm wondering if any of you have had an experience with building your own bike (specifically a commuter). I'm really interested in building my own since my current bike isn't what I want, and I would like to take on the challenge/hobby! So if you have advice or tips on building a bike please share!

My friend helped me build a single speed a few years ago, it's quite the frankenbike but it was a fun project and I absolutely love it. I really still know nothing about bikes since he did most of the work, but when I have worked on it on my own local bike projects/collectives have always been super helpful. They'll have all the tools you need, people can give you advice, and it's a super cool environment.
