Broken leg recovery and staying in shape

Any tips on how to stay in shape while having a broken leg? Can’t really walk around much and it’s kinda depressing to sit on the couch all day. Also worried about my level of confidence in the park when I come back? Is there anyone that has or is having a similar problem That can share their thoughts?

Mobility scooter? go ride the skateparks or streets. Pushing around will get your heartrate up. Vibes for a speedy recovery.

vibes. what kind of break OP? do you have a knee scooter? knee scooter was good for me to get out and about and get back to work but crutches are probably better exercise though. using some dumb bells and pull ups and stuff for the upper body is good too once you are able. I wish I had done more of the little exercises earlier like just moving my toes and then flexing my foot once it was allowed. I really think the more the better with that sort of thing. Anyways ask your doctor and they will give you legit stuff to do and even if it doesn't seem like it's doing much it will pay off

Broken tibia and fibula, they didn’t give me a scooter but i have crutches, though every time I walk around my toes turn blue and swell up

ouch! did you get surgery? sounds like it must be pretty fresh. how long has it been since you broke it? I just snapped my fibula and they screwed it back together with some hardware. yeah I remember the swelling being super bad after surgery. basically whenever I didn't have the break up over my heart it swelled and hurt way more. I ended up having like 8 pillows so I could stack them up and get my leg totally elevated

sounds boring but brain stuff. expand the mind and stuff like that till you can move around more. i got into reading and doing CBT brain exercises and eye exercises to keep the brain firing and not stale while sitting on the couch for a while a few summers ago. its different than a broken leg but honestly you cant really worry about being able to move around until you actually can and get cleared by PT docs and stuff

Nope no surgery, it was 2 days ago and they put me in a splint and told me come back a week to see if I needed surgery. Currently I’ve got 2 pillows stacked under my leg while I take exams, worst week to have a broken leg

I recommend more pillows and really get it up there. The more you can keep the swelling down the better for sure. Elevate so gravity is working in your favor. Also icing was super uncomfortable for me but it really helps with swelling so IMO best to ice a lot anyways and just endure the ice

I broke my lower leg/ankle a few years ago and couldn’t ride for like 4 months. I spent the first 2 months drinking an inappropriate amount, doing drugs, sleeping all day and staying up all night, etc. I lost my job because of my injury and I was also in the middle of a bad breakup so I was just depressed. Then after a few weeks(but way too many weeks early) I said fuck it and and went out for a session. I did my usual 10 minute warm up routine and then decided my ankle was way too weak. It was no surprise that my next trip to the doctor he tells me that my shit didn’t heal yet and I need to give it another several weeks. I spent those weeks doing a lot of core and arm exercises to stay in shape. After I was out of the boot I did squats and calf raises to regain some strength. I also started stretching a lot which is something I still do before any athletic activity. Being rusty from an injury sucks at first but you’ll be so stoked to ride when you’re finally 100% that you won’t even care. You’ll relearn everything pretty fast if you’re young.

if you can manage it, maybe just do some crunches, dumbbell bench press, maybe curls if you're alright to stand for short periods of time? Once your leg heals up enough to stop hurting you can probably do pushups too.

Also this probably sounds mega dumb and it's kinda unrelated, but when I had a concussion and had to lay low without any screens for a couple days, I got one of those knitting ring things that lets you make a hat/gaiter and it was pretty satisfying to wear on the hill for maybe half the season before the yarn started to stretch from the moisture. Worth the couple hours of free time and maybe 25 cents worth of yarn?

Yeah I’ve been laying down with some 10 pound weights, the knitting thing actually sounds like a hella good deal I’ll take that up once finals are done
