my friend broke his thumb once. He just put a sock over the cast and went skiing the next day

That's dumb as fuck. The five times I've broken my thumbs skiing, I wasn't even using pole straps. Changing your pole straps isn't going to do shit.

There aren't many real solutions to this problem. You could either wear a thumb splint every time you ski, duct tape your hands so that you can't open them when you're falling, or try to land all jumps switch.

I think the splint thing is the easiest and most reasonable solution.

Definitely shredded just as hard when i broke my thumb. Skiing with a cast isn't the problem. Skiing right after you get your cast off is what sucks.

I broke my thumb three weeks ago. I was ready to put a sock over the cast and ski but the season started late for us this year. Doing exercises and stuff after you get the cast of significantly reduces the recovery time.

hahahahahahaha you cant ski cause you broke your thumb?

da fuck kind of wimpy logic is that. last time i checked your thumb is not an integral part of your skiing anatomy.

Sure you will have to dial back the intensity a bit, but it should have literally zero effect on ability to ski.

I broke my collar bone a week a go trying to dub flat and im still going to ski near the end of the season maybe even try a dub flat again. How could your season be over for a such a small injury?

I busted my thumb and didnt miss a day. Leave one pole at home and throw a sock over your cast.

Stump wraps look steezy as hell too.

Yep well when mommy says no skiing and wont drive you and your pals to the ski lump your season is over I guess. You can ski with a broken thumb man.

For real?! Get the cast and don't be a pussy. My buddy skied with a broken hand, I've long boarded with 3 broken fingers. Sack up

broke my thumb in november, in a cast for 6 weeks now, been skiing the whole time, need surgery when i go home, cut some socks up and hit the hill

i broke my tibia over Christmas break and got a 16" rod and 2 screws and i can ski again in February how is a broken thumb even a problem?

My daughter broke her thumb down at the growth plate last Feb. They just put her in a cast, and she went on to compete in Jr Nationals one month later. Probably not the smartest decision, but she stomped her runs and made it to finals!

Her thumb still doesn't feel quite right though. She probably should have had surgery, but the doc felt casting was all she needed. Now she just tore her acl:'(

You can tell if a skier's thumb injury needs surgery by pulling the thumb back towards the wrist. If it displaces more than about 45 degrees, the ligament is completely torn and will need to be surgically repaired.

For all the idiots saying he's a pussy for not skiing, you're idiots. You don't know how bad he broke his finger, I broke my pinky and was out from any physical activity for 3 weeks and then lightly for 3 more. There are many degrees to which you can break a finger. I have also broken/fractured another finger and all I did was put on a splint for 2 weeks and I was good. If he is having surgery I assume some pins or screws will be going in to make sure the finger heals rights. You don't want to mess up the healing process. Your finger will be fucked forever if you do.

it actually does. If your pole gets ripped backward then this technique will save you from a painful thumb dislocation.

I broke my thumb in a big air contest many years ago. Then, I finished 4th in the half pipe event late that evening. It was after 4 weeks I went to get some x-rays to find out it was broken and almost done healing. For a month I duck tapped my glove on my pole to ride moguls.

OP, listen to the surgeon and make an informed decision. Ultimately, only you can decide whether your season is over and I'm guessing you're still young so should heal pretty fast. A cast offers a decent amount of protection, after 2-3 weeks i cant see why you won't be able to ski if you take it easy, but you'll know how it feels at that time. Don't be an idiot and ski if it hurts. I broke my hand three years ago and didn't follow the doctors advice, right now my hand is fucked and I'm not sure it'll ever be fixed. Every day its cold, I'm I'm pain. You don't want that.

I have shinbang and im praying to the goodlord alah that itll heal up to the point to were i can ski before next year.

you broke your pinky and were out for 6 weeks??? holy dude man you have some over protective parents hahahaha.

i dont care how bad you break a FINGER(hahahahahaha) you shouldnt be out more than a week. God you are a pussy.

I've broked my arm 2 years ago, thumb last year and broke my arm 2 weeks ago. Skiing with a cast is kinda sketchy but i mean, don't be a pussy and ride, just be more carefoul brother. good luck to you

Same thing happened to me last year in february, after 2 weeks i was skiing again. I just didn't use poles. You'll be fine, just find a huge ass mitten to fit over your cast (assuming you get one)

Broke my collarbone, started skating after about a week and a half. Collarbone is now healed at a brutal angle, and is likely to break again which would require surgery. Make a good decision, but I don't think a thumb is too big of a deal.

AH DERN"T KNEW HAOW 2 REED LOL LOLCATS MAH MUMMY NEHVER TAHT MEE!

explain how it doesn't and maybe i'll learn how to read. look at the picture, there is a technique that is right, and a technique that is wrong. one results in a release of tension, and the latter results in a dislocated thumb. already dislocated my thumb once that way, so don't go preaching your bullshit and saying it doesn't.

PS. fuck you

Danny Woodhead alias???

Nobody's ski season should end for a thumb. That's like saying yuo can't fuck because you stubbed your toe.

You stupid shit. That's the strap technique that everybody uses. It doesn't do shit. It has a lower chance of getting the pole out of your hand than wearing no strap at all, and wearing no strap at all still causes skier's thumb.

Granted, if you're in the rare minority of park skiers stupid enough to put their strap on any other way, it'll help a little. But, don't pretend it's going to eliminate the problem.

I broke my thumb earlier this season. all i did was ask for a brace and find a glove that is big enough to fit over it and your set. only downfall is if you ski with poles you will have to lose them. Get surgery when season is over

Broke my thumb on Saturday and just got that 2 pin surgery this morning. doc said no skiing for 6-8 weeks. I am skiing Friday lol. I'm just going to be real careful and go no pole swag, prolly film duty for a few weeks.

did I at any point say that wearing your poles differently would keep your thumb from breaking? no. did i ever say that it would 100% eliminate the problem? no. i said that it will keep your chances of having a painful dislocation down. maybe you should take your own advice and "learn to read". also, if you've broken your thumb that many times you should probably stop falling on an outstretched hand and learn to fall properly. i'm not saying that you will never break your thumb falling, but when it happens that many times maybe it's time to realize that you're doing something wrong.
