Boosting Local scene

The music scene in my city is really lacking. Not lacking in bands, but yet lacking in people that come see the bands.

One of the problems i know is, most of the shows are 19+, and that really cuts down in the amount of people that can come to shows. But still, when there are All Ages show the numbers only increase very slightly.

I want to find a way to help get people more interested in going to shows, but i dont really know how.

How do you guys promote shows in your area and get people wanting to go check out local bands?

theres a decent one here.. you could book a wedding hall type area with several bands, print up a crap load of flyers, hand them out at school and elsewhere. use myspace, and word of mouth. get friends to bring theire friends. charge around 6 dollars a ticket, and sell water/other snacks really cheap and ull definatly make a profit.. then the next time you do it, more people have heard the bands and if they like them they bring more people, and its all smooth from there

We poster the shit out of pretty much every telephone pole in the vicinity of local schools. We use shzine.com to post about upcoming shows... oh, and probably 98% of the shows here are allage- seeing as 60% of the people that go are underage... it's pretty hard to just instantly make your town's scene grow instantly, but I'd say the very best thing you can do is be as nice as possible to everyone who looks like they're badass enough to appreciate local music, and make friends with them. Then, when a show's coming up, you expect them to go, and get them to convince their friends that it's going to be sick as hell.

small town scenes usually arent very good.....im assuming you live in a smaller town.

there just isnt enough people to make the "scene" ....big cities have it easy, they are much more diverse, more people like the same music. and from my experience...not all shows...but a lot i go to...are better off 19+...at least the more popular bands i see, ive learned a lot of 15 and 16 yr olds just go to shows that are advertised a lot to get drunk...which might bring it a bit more money...but ends up for a shitty night...if you are into the music.

anyways i dont really know how to boost the local scene if there arent enough people there in the first place into the music.

ya, i want to go to a show and hear some 15 year old floozy yell 'i want your babies' or something stupid to the hot one in the band. all ages shows are lame

realistically there isnt really a lot you can do to improve your 'scene.' try to get better bands to come and try to make peoples taste in music less shitty.

Haha, you just reminded me of a band that I saw play a year ago. First take to mind that I live in a hick-town. Well, this band gets on stage and is a mixture of blue-grass, punk, and the sound of nails across a chalk board.

Their very first song was:

"My dog's better than your dog!"

haha..im in college here right now. but after that im going to a bigger city i.e. vancouver or calgary.. good solution
