Try the Beauty Trillogy by Anne Rice (writing as A N Roquelare). Lord of the Rings is always a winner, as it the Neverending Story (it's not just for kids). The Fountanhead is a wonderful read, as are 101 Days in Sodom and Phantom of the Opera.
