Blackberry Messenger?

So, I have a pearl, but not a data plan, just a talk/texting one.The problem is, I don't know if BBM is counted as texting, because as far as I know, it is just between Blackberrys and has nothing to do with the internet. Or, it could be part of a data plan, in which case I;m going to get charged some insane fee for using it.
So, is BBM part of a data plan or not?
Oh, and I'm with telus if it makes a difference
 
yeah i have a pearl too just a basic plan, no data, and i cant get bbm.. while im posting in this thread does anyone else ever loose sound on their BB occasionally? i dont know if its that i dont know how to use the mute button or what but all the sounds just die some days
