Anyone here seen it? I thought it was one of the better crime dramas to hit theaters in a while, the Whitey Bulger saga is so fascinating and corrupt. Was skeptical at first with the casting of Johnny depp but he absolutely crushed it.

People around me (Boston) are generally pretty down on it, they think it tries to humanize him and his actions.

Went and saw it with a homie from Boston and he really liked it. I can see where you're coming from though

But is that such a bad thing? It might be unsettling, but he was a human (albeit a terrible one), and I'm a firm believer that you can see anyone's perspective if you try hard enough. Maybe I'm wrong, I haven't seen the movie, but I know movies can be pretty successful in humanizing irregular characters. I watched the first half of a Ryan Reynolds movie called "The Voices", which essentially humanizes serial killer behavior rooted in schizophrenia. I'm not one for dark movies, so I couldn't finish it, but it was pretty fucked up to see the world through his eyes.

Anyways, the trailer looked phenomenal. Will watch eventually.

i'm from mass, saw it recently and enjoyed it. however i thought it kinda didnt dig deep enough. i wanted to see more about his own personal mind and what was going on rather than him in relation to his crew. i didnt like how they introduced the movie with that one random minor dude and didnt really do anything with him either

I liked the focus on the dynamic of the gang. The whole loyalty thing and how reluctant everyone was to rat was really compelling. I think that's why they started the movie with that character and how one of the first things said is "I'm no rat"

i havent seen it. But ive heard people say it was way over acted

one of the most compelling gangster movies since The Departed. Depp was pretty good, Bulger is a tough person to play and he exceeded my expectations. I thought it tried to really dehumanize his actions though. Theres a scene where he brutally strangles Steve Flemmis young step daughter for little to no reason and his words after were "Im going to take a fucking nap." Pretty Brutal if you ask me.

I live basically right where it was shot and where Whitey used to 'run town', Southie's changed quite a bit, there's still tough areas, but basically the entire east side has been over run by corporate working class

It was an alright movie. I got pretty bored of all the murder scenes, especially with how predictable they were. I was just like oh he's going to murder this guy..oh he's going to murder this guy too. But that's just my opinion

Give it another five years and the whole area will be luxury condos as far as the eye can see. I mean...just look at the waterfront. No one from Boston, let alone southie, can afford to live there anymore.
