Lat sounds like he knows what he's talking about here, but if I have a cut that is 90 degrees or more (yes you can cut more then 90 degrees), I try to use low, opposite spin. If its a cut to the left, use bottom right - and vice versa.
However if the cut is not on the open table but on the rail (frozen works best). Don't try to hit the ball, hit the rail next to the ball as close as possible and spin it off the rail and into the ball.
