it never even says if he's gonna do it.

but anyways when you have that much money, theres not really much else you need so all the extra shit you have you may as well give away if you have everything you could possibly want.

That is absolutely incredible. Gates has always done charity work, but if this goes through it will be HUGE. Thats a lot of cash, hopefully it helps some people out.

I was reading about this somewhere and they were saying some of them were giving half away so their kids can feel like their accomplished something. Like they werent given the easy road. Even if someone is just a billionaire, i think 500 mil would take you a long way.

i bet you bill gates convinced all those billionaires to give there money and he kept his.

that would be thugging

this could help ease a lot of suffering felt throughout the whole world. seeing this kind of thing in the media gives me a good feeling deep down, a lot different than the normal "if it bleeds it leads" sort of media attention. good job bill.

bill gates has said before that he wants to make sure his family will always live comfortably, but outside of that probably huge sum, he has no need for it. He already gives tons away, so im sure he'd be willing to give away some more.

His version of "half my money" is enough for me to go to school for the next like 10 years, get my parents a 2-3 bedroom 2 bath house in Whistler, a Corvette, Ford GT, and a Nissan GTR R35 and still have some left over though isn't it?

Bill Gates has already set his will so that all of his fortune goes to charity. Thats why he is such an example for giving to charity.

His kids only get $10,000 a piece I believe.

Imagine how pissed you would be..you're dad has 53 billion and he gives it all away. The least he could do would be give 1 bil to each of his kids so its a nice number.

with 20b you could buy 200 of the worlds mst expensive housesshit you could buy intrawest(company that owns Whistler) 5 times over

source i found was ten million each.

and most likely guaranteed executive positions at microsoft to build on that

I would set it up so my kids get an annual allowance, so they don't blow 1 bil quickly. I'd also teach them how to invest, and spend wisely, and have budgets on certain things, so they don't go out and buy 12 fucking cars and a years supply of coke

if my dad was bill gates and i didnt get at least one billion after he died i would be sad, its like 2.5% of his fortune only (assuming 40 billion total)

i heard a while ago a number, it was a rough estimation of how much $ would be needed to effectively end world starvation (or however this thing is called in english).

the statement was made by some UN, WHO or whatever guy, and what i remember (dont know the exact figure), it was way under 50 billion $. seems a lot, but if you think how much money the US spend for military, its not a lot.

so hopefully, gates' project can help there and on other issues (if you think how much money COULD be collected) like medical help, education for third-world countries etc. awesome stuff if you ask me. YES, you cannot buy more shit with 20 billion as you can with 10 billion, but its still pretty awesome if they actually do it.

If I was Bill Gates I wouldn't give my kids shit. It's bad parenting to toss your kiddies a billion dollars.

while i do think it is great to give to charity and help the needy, africa needs to be an example of just throwing money at a problem and expecting things to change, the us and countless other companies have been throwing money at Africa for years, and nothing has come out of it.. while africa is unique with its extreme corruptness and military problems, these charity's need to do something with this money rather than just handing it over

I don't think I've seen anything where he said he was donating soley to Africa (unless you were just using that as an example).

Look at Detroit. According to an article in the newest Fortune, 2% of public high school students are prepared for college-level math, while only 11% are prepared for college-level reading. Detroit's graduation rate for high school seniors in 2008-09 was 60%. If the Detroit public school system can be recipient of some major cash infusions from philanthropists (like NYC, New Orleans, and Chicago have been), they could see a sharp increase in that graduation rate by the end of the decade.

So to counter your point, in some instances cash infusions do help - while I will agree that you first need to buckle down on corruption.

i'm sure your outlook won't change the slightest bit someday when your parents leave you an inheritance.

It's not bad parenting, it's a privilege. Gates wasn't born with billions, he made it all himself. And what's the point of making all that money if you aren't going to use any of it help secure a comfortable future for your family down the line? He's going to donate the majority of it, but make sure his kids, grandkids and so forth all live well. As far as i'm concerned, he's got the right to do whatever he damn well pleases with his money.

He could just as easily say "fuck everyone, i'm making a house out of stacks of money, then filling it with orphans and burning it to the ground!" But he's not, because he knows better than that. Gates is a good man, and i'm sure he's raising his kids to be like that.

Honorable shit right there.

Reading the Warren Buffet pledge was incredibly insightful and the man is seriously honorable for doing the right thing.

Rush Limbaugh said this is a bad idea. Says its spreading the wealth and soon there going to be asking millionaires to do it.
