hey everyone...i have this friend and hes takin me big mountain skiing, and he told me to pack my bag...so i was wondering what should i pack in my bigmountain pack??

thanks

Like Backcountry skiing? Shovel, Avy beacon, Probe (240cm or longer), avalung, extra layers, radio, skins, snow analysis kit... and samiches... lots of those.

Then you may be interested in getting some touring bindings and climbing skins, otherwise you're going to have to hike through waist deep snow.

Shovel will cost $25-$75

Probe will cost $25-$100

Avy Beacon will cost $250-$400

Avalung will cost $100

Climbing skins will cost $100

Snow Analysis Kit will cost about $100

There are courses which are highly recommended. It's not worth getting everything if you have absolutely no clue how to do a proper search using a beacon. Getting a heli lift out of the BC if you get in trouble is crazy expensive, so spend some time learning first.

You know what, on second thought, this just sounds scary. Your friend just tells you to pack your bag without even giving you any details? If I were you, I'd be really worried. If you get buried, can you trust your friend enough to know that he/she will know how to run a search with an avy beacon?

If you do plan on doing this, at least do a few practice searches together so you can build up the trust.

yea dude, learn your shit before you go. and learn it as you go. go with someoen like your friends uncle who knows his stuff, only way to learn is to do it and see it. know how to use your beacon and probe, blah blah blah, but most importantly, just know how to stay out of an avy in the backcountry. their so avoidable.

oh, and instead of cliff bars, try some sharp cheddar cheese and summer sausage. works wonders on hikes and tours. just a hint.
