The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
In terms of modern westerns I would say Open Range is pretty awesome, great action, realistic, and actual loud gun shots, and an old fashioned shoot outs.
3:10 to Yuma was alright, not exactly my type of western though.

it is a western because it is set in the old west. the 3 movies are called spaghetti westerns because they were filmed in Italy because at the time it was cheaper to film them there. They are western movies, a fistfull of dollars was set on the Mexico and at that time texas/new mexico border.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was nasty and i thought 3:10 to Yuma was an awesome "newschool" western

If you haven't seen it yet, make sure to catch "The Good, The Bad, and the Weird". It's an Oriental Western and probably the most entertaining film to be released in the US this year.
Aside from the ones already mentioned, I gotta give a vote to Yul Brynner's performance in "Westworld".
I know there's a ton from the olden days, but 1992's "Unforgiven" is very good. "Desperado" (El Mariachi) with Banderas isn't all that bad either.

Outlaw Josey Wales. Hands down. John Wayne movies are great with True Grit and the Seachers prob the best known, but The Cowboys, El Dorado, and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon are also def worth watching. Cullupepper Cattle Company and B.C and the SD kid are also both excellent flicks.

I havent seen many real classic western movies but, I do like Dances with Wolves, Open Range, and Young Guns.
