I'm assuming you're talking streetwear clothing... not ski clothing. Unfortunately we get raped by prices no matter what we do - buy from states, it's cheaper but shipping kills. Buy domestic, usually the price itself is jacked up to make up for the costs the company went through to bring the product up here. I usually just buy from Karmaloop when they have free shipping deals, since then I'm getting good prices, AND not getting raped by shipping prices. Tax will probably still apply, but that applies no matter what you do.
