Just moved to Utah, Everyone here is crazy proud of there snow

Every single person Ive asked this question is extremely biased towards there home state or country

so, World travelers...

Where is the best snow on Earth?

somewhere where it snows when it's cold, so the snow has a very low density and is really light and fluffy. So maybe Alaska?

upstate new york has some of the best snow ever, its the perfect balance of powderish/iceish.all of it comes off lake ontario as lake effect. i get like 5 feet a year at my house.

Repost.....Alaska, B.C. and Japan have the some of the lowest average water content in their snow which makes it the fluffiest snow you can find.

well, no. Alaska is a Maritime climate, meaning the water content of the snow is way higher than a place like Utah (and Colorado, Alberta, Montana, etc) Utah's snow is especially light because the weather systems come straight off the desert and hit the Wasatch Range - which is a Continental climate.

Alaska's maritime climate ("wet" snow) combined with the sheer amount of snow that hits the mountains there is what allows the snow to stick to such steep faces making for some gnarly skiing potential.

I live near the alps, really great snow ! Guess the best, lighter, deepest snow lies in Japan .. I mean just look at some segments in japan.!

Durrand Glacier? 1340in Average annual.

Currently 150in base at the lodge, 250+ base in the alpine. 6ft in the last week.

Would love to spend a few seasons up there to verify.

Japan. By far.

I've only skied tahoe, utah and colorado.

The water content in japanese snow is far less then Utahs.

In amount of water density (or how light the snow is)

Japan -> Utah/Wyoming/Montana/CO (aka rockies) -> Sierras -> Cascades

Not sure where europe falls into that spectrum

IMO matters the most, but some people like heavier snow some people like lighter snow, etc. its preference.

Best snow means lots of things. Stability, density, quantity, preservation, Wind, humidity, sunlight, temperature should also be considered.

woah, i have to agree 100% with this statement, japan's snow (apperently, ive only skiied onteribble and quebec) is really nice, its really fluffy and light and thus really mellow for pow skiing
