Best moment you had this season?

The snow forecast predicted 18 inches for the next day but that night I had a dream where I woke up and there was 5 inches of sleet outside and it was raining. I got so bummed out in the dream that I woke up for for real, only to look outside and see 30 inches of snow on the ground with it still dumping like crazy. By the end of the day I was skiing 44 inches of blower powder

Gotta be the surprise 8” pow day, hit the highest part of flippers and stomped that shit under the chair

This season in utah has been absolutely ridiculous it’s almost impossible. Any number of bottomless days, cliff stomps, and just general ass hauling. Did some rad shit with homies new and old, was in great company the entire time.

Best day so far would be bottomless turns about a week ago. Awesome day out, with no queues anywhere I went during 5 hours of fresh tracks :-) Bluebird pow day both on (certain areas higher up) and off piste. Top notch. Possibly going to be another morning like that one during this week as well.

Probably the 28 inch pow day we got back in March where we were only expecting ~8 at most. Also did my first backflip in a few years this past week which is a big ole confidence booster

Dropping into upper cirque at snowbird without being able to see my skis from the weather, and finding chest deep powder

Everybody's been mentioning snowbird but I too had a sick ass day. Got my first waist deep pow turns and some sick face shots, literally can't even describe what skiing deep pow for the first time was like.

-landed my first backflip

-20+ inches overnight at Brighton on a weekday

-slushiest park day at steamboat last Saturday hitting the smoothest big jump practicing new spins and grabs

-went to Jackson first time and skied Corbets

-got in 40 days (still going) as a full time 9 to 5 worker in Denver front range

it’s been a great season man

Not sure there's truly a best moment, but touring up first snowfall and getting like 16" of freshy in November was a magical feeling.

birthday was on a Thursday in February, forecast said 1-4" and it ended up being like 15 up high at Alta. side stepped over 3 miles total, got fresh tracks on ballroom and the shoulder cliffs, devils castle and the apron, backside, supreme chutes, etc. it was unreal

probably realizing my love for skiing still exists, i just have to go get it. so many resorts suck now, i can’t help but be jaded and nostalgic when i’m stuck in traffic/lines.

touring and independent resorts still have what i’m looking for, even the “big snow” mountains monday-thursday still hold their magic. basically blossoming out of weekend warrior to full on playing hooky at work ;). quiet, happy people who love winter.

one of my skater friends the other day said “snow sports are for jocks” and i can’t help but feel some weight in that. aside from “comp jocks”, there’s so many 20-40 year olds now that were high school/college athletes that now picked up skiing cause they feel worthless. and now they’re try hards wearing this years picture organic/arcteryx kits and 5 voile straps on their poles.

idk, ski culture never felt like that before covid to me. in my experience the bad asses rock 5 year old gear they repair themselves, so all these new people look like clowns. don’t even get me started on gaper day. it’s now our equivalent of “go skate day”, and i avoid it all together.

what i’m trying to say is getting lost in the woods safely is my favorite thing to do. i don’t care if you’re better than me former D1 hockey player (still probably aren’t tho), get away from me i’m tryna eat my pocket skittles and eat face shots.

Resonating super hard with this. Especially in my senior year at u of u this place is a hotspot for ski jocks. Everyone has this inflated ego and wants to go pro/talks themselves up, it’s super cringe. Leads to just a weird campus atmosphere, but I don’t really care at this point since I’ve luckily been able to remove myself from it and met some likeminded friends who just want to ski.

like don’t get me wrong I played football in high school, but skiing isn’t some weird way to “relive the glory days”, skiing should be a way to escape society for a couple hours a couple days a week and go live it up with your people. Hell we can’t even be assed to take our phones out of our pockets for 30 seconds to try and get a clip, it just feels like a waste of time when we could be ripping around and having a blast.

I’m 100% certain that social media is at least partially to blame for this, everyone wants to put reels and tik toks up so everyone else can know how good they are but especially in salt lake it leads to this crazy hardo atmosphere that wasn’t there nearly as much back when I lived in Tacoma

After getting 8” overnight at baker, my homies and I had a lil safety meeting and then proceeded to drop everything in sight and ride everything a ski length from the person in front of you. No better feeling

Solo day at Snowbird. It was dumping snow to the tune of about 4-5 inches an hour and the tram wasn't running due to 60 mph winds at the top. Somehow the little cloud lift to the top of the mountain was still open and no one was skiing one of my favorite runs off of the end of the cirque. I did 4 laps of The cirque traverse into a sheltered run called Dalton's when it had 2 feet of fresh snow on it and you legitimately couldn't see or feel your track from the previous run. I gave myself frostbite skiing off of the top but I got to ski 4 runs of bottomless untracked powder in an incredible storm. I think that's my favorite day of the year but that feeling of holy shit no on else has touched this and realizing you have about 2500 vert of untracked powder to ski is up there for the top feelings of life.

Either getting dumped on at Anthony Lakes and taking students off piste for the first time or skiing the East Wall at A Basin the other day.

Honestly haven't felt my best this season, I dont think I tried anything over a 5 due to poor park quality/lack of drive or confidence but I was able to help some friends learn their first 3's and 5's and those were some of the most fun days Ive ever had on snow

Hit some weird cliff at copper along copper bowl after getting stuck on it for a few minutes. Felt very good stomping it in front of a crowd.

I skied a LOT of insane powder between mammoth and Utah but I gotta say my favorite memory from this season by far was getting to hike a rail with the homies with a view of the Channel Islands and then drive 30 minutes to the beach to surf some of the best swell Santa Barbara got all winter. Never gonna forget that shit

Second time I’ve ever been to Vermont it snowed over a foot got to lap prime sugarbush no lines with dads college roommate as our guide. He knows the mtn like the back of his hand got to all the goodies

Coming back from knee surgery last year and still being able to ski pow, rip groomers, and drop the occasional cliff. Also getting close to 100 days which is my goal for the year

truth ?

edits are cool and all but i focus on skiing first, then telling other people. my funnest days have little/no videos because i’m skiing the whole time

also learning to enjoy the sport for yourself is important. i definitely don’t ski to fit in i just do it because i love to do it. no pressure, just have fun

Damn straight :-) The only time I get filmed is when someone else is deciding to do it, sometimes you get the feeling the film is more important than the doing... Had a few people offering to film me this season, while building off piste step ups and around the park. To be fair mostly I'm not interested, it is more about the memories in my head, and the sensation of doing it. Love the sport, and the send. I've been doing it now for about 45 years, still ride park, though I don't try so hard these days following the usual injuries over the years of trying harder. So mostly do up to XL kickers (conditions depending) with hangin shifties enjoying the view while I'm up there. Occasionally I get young uns asking me if I can't spin or something in a slightly disparaging way, like I did last year... mostly they think I'm in my 20's, til I tell em :-) Getting old brings some level of responsibility, plus now that I'm near 50 if get a solid injury it could end it all. They tend to understand once they know. But it is interesting that anyone actually cares what you're doing on a park run. I get it if you're in competition, then you want to be winning, but free skiing, hell just enjoy the fact that there are others doing it too. Anyone being in the park doing it is good, straight air, spins, flips, whatevs... cause if they aren't there it won't be long before the resort doesn't make any parks anymore..... Maybe this is just the wisdom of old age :-)

think you get noticed more since your older and older park skiers tend to be really good

Touring on my birthday in October. That was probably it otherwise. This season has been hell but it's nice that its warm again and spring conditions are making their return + places still open until may.

that’s wiiiiild shoulda brought your snorkel

Nice day out here in France today :-)

1069235.jpeg

View from the Cable Car station heading up in the morning. Brightened up nicely and held blue overhead with atmospheric clouds all round but not over this part of the resort, until about 1500 when I called it a day cause my legs were getting tired after hot lapping for 4.5 hours without a break

Lifts on wind hold at Boho after a two foot storm. Bootpacked the hill three times and experienced real powder turns for the first time

First time skiing powder at Okemo over spring break, drove for 10 hours straight to make it, got in right before the storm picked up, spent the next several days skiing 3 feet of untouched pow everywhere with friends. Magical experience.
