after effects isnt for editing, just cool effects on single clips. for editing, you need premiere or something. or final cut pro, since you are apparantly on a mac

imovie is about as user friendly as it gets, thought FCE doesn't take very long to learn, especially if you feel like you are outgrowing imovie. FCP would also work, or premiere as mentioned earlier.

btw those are all free through torrents. If you don't want to torrent, it is going to be challenging to find a more advanced program, unless you are either really chill with the av guy at your school, or really sneaky, and you find a way to get their version
