Best and Worst Smells and Scents

Ah, the summer is here. Great smells and scents floating in the air all around us. But with the heat also the worst stanks rise to the surface and tickle your nasal cavities the wrong way.

My favorite scent, as I once again noticed, is the smell of freshly cut grass, it's very endearing. A close second would be the fresh scent of a mixed forest just after a swift summer rainstorm.

The worst smell I can think of is rotten fish. When I was younger we thought it would be fun to stick some coarse fish or fish entrails into a hollow pipe at the edge of the pier and close it with a makeshift lid. After about three months of baking under one of the hottest summer suns in recent memory, we decided to check out how the fish were holding up. I still have nightmares about that stench. A runner-up would be the now-moldy wool socks that had been jammed at the bottom of my backpack for nearly two weeks in the army.

So what are your favorite and not-so-favorite smells? It could be anything - dandelions, your childhood home, your balls or vagoo, anything. Just choose the best and worst with runner-ups if you must!

-Something only farm kids know about....fresh chopped silage! Favorite smell in the whole world.

-Fresh cut grass (I work golf course maintenance)

-Snowmobile exhaust

-Fresh cut 2x4

Worst:

-Diesel exhaust

Worst - Landfills on hot summer days. I've been subjected to it once in my life and I am making it a point for it to be the ONLY time in my life. I doubt there is anything worse.

Yeah. I'm talking about going into the belly of the beast to the incinerator as well. It does not get more vile than that.

I change my worst to water treatment center. Whomevers idea it was to lure a bunch of elementary school children into a giant oven that burns human fecal matter and claim it as a "feild trip" was an evil, evil man.

Yesterday I was walking my roommates dog with mine and we walked near a pile of random dog shit. He bent down and literally smeared his face and neck in it. Grossest thing I have ever seen/smelt. Fucking dog.

best: a chick's hair when she comes out of the shower

worst: when you fart under your bed sheets on a hot night and lift the top up 10 minutes later

honorable mention: there's an icecream place in montreal that i used to always go to that smells like heaven. it's cold inside, and when you open the door you get a fresh breeze and can only smell delicious flavors of ice cream and candy.

best: towels/bed sheets fresh out of the laundry worst: when i opened our trash can to find a bunch of maggots and rotten shit

Best

Freshly grinded quality coffee

Freshly baked Swedish cinnamon rolls (bullar ftw!)

That girls perfume

New shoes

The sea

Worst

Puke

Rotten eggs

Moldy stuff

Sidenotes

I don't really like the smell of freshly cut grass. It reminds me to much of summer and troubled times.

Also freshly is a funny word.

Best: -when the Lilac outside my house blooms in spring-driving past the Oroweat bakery on Evans & I-25 at like 1am because thats when they bake.

-nice leather

-meat on a grill

-dryers

Worst:

-elementary school bathrooms (especially in summer)

-puke (also one of my least favorite SOUNDS)

-old sperry topsiders

well, yes and no. because the bus itself is usually really old so the seats start to smell bad from both the kids and the fact that there this weird leather blend and old foam then the diesel from the bus creates a horrid stench that mixes with the smells of all the unwashed/gaseous kids on the bus. and the fact that no one ever picks up there trash doesn't help.

riding the bus was probably the worst part of school for me

That's unfortunate. If you didn't notice, you are now SURROUNDED by construction at work. It's ruining my bike ride to classes

Best: BBQ chicken smoke sneaking out of the grill, campfire scent stuck to my clothes, sex and sweat in perfect harmony, 2 stroke dirtbike smoke.

Worst: Rotting roadkill flesh, Burning food(the second you realize you've fucked up), stagnant salt or brackish water.
