close to bachelor, 3.5 hrs to the ocean, lots of national forest, etc.

Can anyone give me some info? Anything is appreciated, just trying to

paint a picture in my head of what its like.

Definitely a real fun town, pretty dry and medium warm in the summer. Bachelor generally gets super dry pow, and back in the city there is usually a couple snow dumps each year.

Living costs arent too bad, there is a lot of retired folks and second homes there.

Biking is all time, most of it is just a few miles out of the city and you can ride too it. the deschutes is mad fun to float down too, my cousins had a house right on the river and we would be on it all the time.

I went to Bend, OR about 2 years ago. Best place I've ever been too. The town is awesome, Bachelor was straight dry powder fresh tracks. Bend would be first in places I want to live, I'm jealous of you.

Mountainbiking is amazing there from what i've seen/heard. And then there's bachelor, which in it self is nice. I would say do it. Bend seems cool, if I were to move anywhere in the states it would be my second pick to so cal.

well I don't live there, but I have family in bend and from the times that I've been there I can tell you that it is easily my favorite town. Here's what I can tell you:

Skiing- bachelor is like 30 minutes away and of course has some of the best skiing around. Hood is like 2-2.5 hours away as well.

Biking- there are tons of super fun xc/enduro trails around, and has some amazing dirt jumps/slalom tracks, and great skateparks if you're into that. I don't know specifics, I just remember riding some fun shit. Plus hood river is nearby and has the infamous post canyon jumps.

People- everyone I've met there are really cool, down to earth, and even somewhat eccentric. Between hippies and people that just love the outdoors, you won't find a more pleasant area.

Fishing/Camping- pretty self explanatory, there's cool areas around lakes/rivers everywhere

Women- who doesn't love an outdoorsy west coast babe without the annoying california-ness... they're everywhere.

Food/Nightlife- tons of fun breweries and restaurants that usually have live bands and such.

Lets not forget the hiking too, I hiked south sister last summer and it was great.

No matter what kind of biking you want to do, theres something. A few of my favs- DH: Cline Butte, FR: The Lair, AM: Phils Trailhead, DJ: Slalom Track, Train track jumps, shredmond; Skateparks- Truck stop (idk if its still there), sisters is getting a new park that looks sick too. Post Canyon is not the best right now, some logging is going on here and there and they had a massive storm last winter that brought down tons of trees and wrecked some of the famed fmx jumps.

I've got a couple buddies out there and it is awesome. Perfect four season kind of place, the town is so chill, the people I know there are awesome. I would be stoked on living there at some point in the future. Bend or back to Steamboat are top two on my list of places to live.

Grew up in steamboat -- its hard to leave.

also, how big is bend? I mean i know it says 150k on wiki, but does it feel that big?

My parents have a house in Bend. Definitely one of my favorite cities. So much to do and so many cool people. I would definitely suggest moving there. Not sure how good the job market is though

Okay, here we go.

Skiing. Mt. Bachelor basically is in this natural symbiosis with Bend. The ski resort and the town feed off of each other so much, that it's a bit crazy. Bachy, like most volcano hills isn't the most gnarly mountain (some including myself call it Mt. Flatchelor), and there really isn't a single spot on the mountain where you can send it off a cliff or anything... but it is about 25-35 minutes away, and is pretty fun still. It's large enough to accommodate the crowds, and has some good powder that's actually damn light a lot of the time. When the top is open, you get lots of different types of snow on the way down, which gives some challenge. The runs are fairly long, and the parks are phenomenal. The weather is fucking temperamental as fuck, though.

Other than that, Hoodoo is about an hour out of town for something different (but mostly a smaller version of the same thing without crowds... but cheap passes for night skiing! and an OK park, as well), backcountry in the sisters and crater lake areas are very easy to get to, and Hood is within a daytrip distance.

Biking. Thousands. Literally Thousands of awesome bike trails all over the place. Bend kicks fucking ass for mountainbiking and roadbiking alike. I really don't have to go into it because it's something I haven't fully explored.

Fishing is pretty damn solid.. You can't really beat the Deschutes for fly fishing, and it's the only place where you can pull out Redband trout (unique to the Deschutes). There are also lots of lakes around for other types of fishing.

Nightlife and Bars are excellent for a smaller town. The place swells with tourists during any season, so you meet lots of people, and enough kids go to COCC (community college) and OSUC (growing 4 yr university) that there is a bit of a college presence too (though not very much) I'll use this spot to touch on "breweries/food" because they are kinda part of the night life. Taprooms galore, and Bend has an "ale trail" because it has like 7 breweries right in town. Several have their own restaurants and shit, and holy fuck it's the dankness (seriously... Deschutes brewery for one has become one of my favourite microbrews - and is the only brewery I know of in this country that nitrogenates certain beers - a la Guinness) Restaurants cater to tourists, so they're usually really dank, but can be a bit pricy. There's plenty of variety, however. Go to Parilla for the best value food in town... (also, if you don't have your own hot tub, go to MacMinamins, grab a pint and pay 5$ for the soaking pool they have there. It's like a massive turkish bath, and it's badass as fuck after a day of shredding around

Live Music is alright. They attract about the same as what you'd expect for a 100k person city or so. I can't really talk on this issue, as I grew up spoiled as shit going to shows in San Francisco - Almost anywhere else is a bit of a 'meh' scene. But Bend gets some good acts rolling through every once in a while. They just don't have some large venue to play in or anything.

Women? I'd say the ratio is pretty even... It's a large place though, so I really wouldn't call it a parking lot or anything like most ski towns tend to be.

Camping/Kayaking/Rafting? All great least to my knowledge. like biking, I haven't fully explored it, but it's all either right there or within a manageable driving distance.

Cost of living is pretty average, but definitely affordable if you do it right. Oregon has no sales tax, so if something says its 9 bucks, it's fucking 9 bucks. The dollar store? Yeah.. it's actually a DOLLAR store... you pay ONE DOLLAR and you're done. On the contrary, someone else has to pump gas for you. You can't pump it yourself. It's kinda nice if it's fucking cold out though, so you don't really have to get out of your car and deal with anything - but after 10PM? There's like 2 gas stations open, and they're all the way on the edge of the town and that is the most obnoxious thing for a night-owl like myself...

Job market isn't too terrible. There are tons of businesses in town, but lots of them tend to be seasonal, as the ebb and flow of tourist seasons go by. There's enough grocery stores and such around, though, that as long as you're presentable, and somebody is hiring, you should be able to snag a job. If you're moving there professionally, then that's a whole other matter, but for the most part, it's better in Bend for young folks looking for work than lots of other cities of the same size.

So yeah. I like Bend. Kinda looking at it as a potential destination to move to, soon.

I live in Bend so I guess I should give my two cents. Dingosean had it right on a few things but Ill elaborate. Bend is a sick ass place to live. Short of surfing it's got everything you could want to do. Bachelor parks are pretty alright. Don't change them up very much which sucks since they lost their better park cat driver. Still a solid park though and fun mountain all around. Pretty large which spreads crowds out well. As far as concerts go Id say its better than alright. Last summer Tenacious D, Beck, were two I saw. This year we've had Macklemore, Method Man, Tyler the creator is coming, Rebelution. It's really not bad. Oh and Yonder Mountain String Band. All good enough stuff depending on what you're into.

Gas station open 24 hrs on westside so no issues there. Just opened up so might be why Dingosean hasn't heard the great news.

Housing is pretty cheap considering there is so much of it and not enough people to fill it. I live in a nice condo with 2 bedrooms on the nicer westside for $795 + electric and thats it. right near campus and in a sweet part of town.

Lots of money here which means a swanky downtown and everything is generally nice. More Audi's and WRX/STI than I can count haha. also means a lot of yuppies which can be annoying with all their Patagonia microdown jackets but it is what it is.

Social scene is poor so don't plan on partying it up every night. or every weekend for that matter unless you are searching it out. also desirable girls are few and far between.

Overall its a dope spot. come check it out before moving though.

oh and bachelor is open until may 26th... so thats a thing.

bend is hands down the best place i have ever been. Nothing i can say bad about it.Not many places in this world where you can ski all day Mtn bike in the afternoon and climb at one of the best rock gyms imaginable. im from there and can say everytime i go back i ask myself why i left and when i can move back. like previously stated there is a fuck ton of yuppies but easy to get away from. the beer is fantastic and food is phenomenal. If i could live in one place in this entire world it would be bend oregon. once im done with college you will be able to find me roaming around bend and skiing bachelor.

Lived there til I was eighteen. Loved it. Visit it a bit to for vacation. Munchin music on Thursday's downtown. Decent bands at the les schwab amphitheater . Seen built to spill, cold play, modest mouse, jack Johnson, the flaming lips.

Wow, that's more music than I actually expected... I never hear about music shows in Bend though... so if anything, they are poorly advertised outside of town, since I'm only 3 hours away... Then again, I saw a lot of those acts at Sasquatch, so maybe I wasn't paying attention to anything happening in Bend prior or thereafter... Saw Yonder Mountain over the weekend here in Ashland, as well as Aesop Rock just last night here in town... I'm assuming aesop is coming through bend, too?

WHERE IS THIS GAS STATION. Seriously, I fucking drove for like 45 minutes and passed bout 16 dark and coned off fuel stations before I finally found the goddamn Arco last time I was up there... How the fuck does HWY 97 not have at least 5 stations open 24 hrs going through the largest down on it's entire stretch? Shit is preposterous... Never had to deal with that issue before the other week I was up there, but having never lived outside of a town where just about EVERY gas station is 24 hours, I was fucking frustrated as hell... and I was staying all the way up off Century... so maybe that had something to do with it? shit..

And.. I have never experienced Bend as a >21 year old... so my experience must be more positive when it comes to the nightlife stuff. There's definitely a fair share of spots to get a drink and watch a game (that said, this state has UO's Nike Swoosh shaped dick so far down it's throat that it's hard to watch anything but UO sports all the damn time in Bars), and there's some nightclub called 'seven' or something, that... I haven't really gone to, but it kinda looks sorta bro'ish if you will... food prices are really good though, from what I hear... so maybe it's worth it anyways?

Decided to bring back an old thread rather than make a new one.

Planning to move to Bend in either the spring, or end of summer. I am about to graduate college and my girlfriend and I are pumped about going to Bend.

I had a question about rentals/jobs. You guys think there is a better time to find good housing/jobs? I could move in May as soon as I'm done with school, but my girlfriend and I were planning on camping out here all summer in Colorado and then moving at the end of summer with some money saved.

Anyone have any input or advice? Would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
