I feel like all of these are a bit extreme except the first 1.
I think it's Columbine that really made that change. As someone who was in junior high/ highschool for Columbine, and then 9/11.. A lot of fucked up shit happened in those few years. Before that, students didn't have cell phones in school. Social media didn't exist. The internet wasn't the primary news source, so we learned about things by watching what everyone else was. There wasn't an opportunity to spread hysteria. A major news event would happen and it would be an opportunity for discussion in our Civics courses.
It's amazing how much those 2 events and then social media/the internet made such dramatic changes in the way our society handles issues.
I'm glad I grew up when my parents didn't need to worry about being arrested for letting me go to the park alone in 3rd grade. My childhood would never fly now.
I feel a little sad for some of you.
