Beginner tips on half pipe

Hey! This is my first time posting here! So I’m at loon mountain this week and they have a mini half pipe at the little sister park, I tried it but got humbled quick and I was wondering if anyone have any good beginner tips on half pipes!

I can’t ski pipe at all but I’ve been humbled in the mini pipe at loon way more than in the big pipe, the tranny is almost too tight to land correctly in that thing

Yeah I agree ngl because I saw no one was ever attempting it and I was just like tf

its way more fun to ski it like a miniramp/bowl, airing out of it usually results in dying. i have one friend who did a flair in it last year and i have 0 idea how he did because he's like 6'4

I would say just get really good at normal park stuff before you start going into the pipe. Everything there is just the same skills that you learn doing normal jumps, just with a lot higher consequences.

The real surprise here is that a park still has a half pipe

loon is slowly giving less of a shit ab the actual pipe every year but they usually do a minipipe in the small/family park

Good to hear they still have a pipe. Pipes can be big brick ice death looking things especially on the east. Start mellow. Can carve it even but a small even shitty air isn't too bad and fun. As you get confidence take a little more speed in.

Pipes are a lot about your edges and the angle you tske in. Even in the drop you'll see people kind of do a turn and almost or actually jump off it. Thats a bad line and will kill all your speed. Riding along the deck to the spot you want to drop in. Getting a smooth transition and then getting on edge going across the pipe. If you hold a good edge, take a good line,

you can go decently uo there without a ton of speed.

I think going with less speed till you're confident is a good way to built up proper technique. If you go too fast and scrub speed or change your line it's fine, but not a great habit. Go in slow at first, choose a line and comit. Even if you're 5 feet below the coping. You can work off that till youre at coping, then start to go above if you feel like it.

Pipes are really fun and it's a bummer to see them all go. Hope you

dig it and have some fun in there!

i think the reason loon gives less and less of a shit is because the maintenance is insane and it always ends up being an icy death trap with all the parents and their kids who just push snow through it

Don't let speed scare you. My biggest bad habit as a young grom pipe skier was scrubbing speed in the bottom in between the transitions and I'm still getting around to it at age 27 lol. But trust your edging and pump and also stand-up in the transitions before you pop-off on the wall. Don't pop early because you'll land in the flats. Angle's matter too. Don't hit it straight up and down. Go for downslope angles if that makes sense.

Wait for spring. Slush pipes are nice. I’ve only ever managed slight turns when airing out but if you’re inexperienced, really wait till the warmer days. Half pipes are notorious for serious injuries mid season.
