Beckham signs with L.A Galaxy

This is pretty big news for MLS and soccer in North America

Quote from Beckham:

"This week, Real Madrid asked me to make a decision regarding my

future and the offer to extend my contract by a further two seasons,"

Beckham said in a statement.

"After discussing several options with my family and advisers to

either stay here at Madrid or join other major British and European

clubs, I have decided to join the Los Angeles Galaxy and play in the

MLS from August this year."

MLS has a salary cap in place, but it recently made a change to the

system that allows clubs to sign one star player without it counting

against the cap. Terms of Beckham's contract with the Galaxy were not

released, but British news reports put the L.A. deal at $250 million US.

Reportedly it's going to be a 5 year contract

That's pretty incredible.

it makes sense....he has his training camp in LA. Although he over rated, hes still a good player. Hopefully this and other moves like it will help expand soccer in North America

yeah thats huge for soccer in the states, hopefully it can draw more good players from europe to the mls. i just wanna see the mls be a legit league some day

hahahhahaha - thats funny

this is great news for soccer fans and players alike in north america. i'm pretty stoked...

I have no idea where all the teams in MLS are, who the champs are, etc anyways!

50 mil (speculated) a year is a pretty serious contract - regardless of

the sport. Do you think he's going to have that big of an impact on

the league??

Would you go watch a game based on the fact that he's going to be there??

MLS has absolutely nothing on European clubs... i can't imagine MLS getting so big that it's involved in champions league action either. That's a huge time difference for the games.

The MLS all stars did beat Chelsea (best team in the world with the possible exception of Madrid) one time. So the MLS isn't that bad. But this is clearly a publicity thing, and Beckham's getting on in years and just doesn't have the same value over in the more competitive Euro leagues, so he signs in the USA where he's still a star and where his very existence should increase ticket sales dramatically.

this is fuckin amazing, its a huge step in establishing the MLS as a competative and respective league in global soccer. its is a ton of money but a great step in the right direction

wow that musttttt be (if true) highest paid athleete in northamerica, like salary paid. and yes i didnt kno that soccer was big enough in the states to afford paying a player taht much?

Real Madrid is good no doubt, but not spectacular. they have all the all-stars but no chemistry

thats what i was thinking of. lots of older players... at least thats been the case. i saw them when they came through salt lake last summer. it was fun.

beckham isn't even that great a field player, he's only valuble when it comes to corners or freekicks

its gonna be a huge draw for the league though. all kinds of people who read US weekly and people magazine will be buying ticks when LA comes to their town to see him. i think its great for MLS.

he only did it for the money. football will never be big in the states because there's no time to put in advertisements if it's on TV. no major station will cary it if they can make more money by playing something that can stop and go to commercial every few minutes.

and did i really just see someone write that Chelsea was the best team in the world? i guess that's why they drew against Wycombe yesterday. i'm surprised Jose Mourinho didn't try to buy Beckham himself.

Yeah, I've seen them blow a few good matches. Well, they SHOULD be the best team in the world, and look like it when they play well.

Man this is just like when Pele signed with the New York Cosmos back in the day....except that Becks sucks?

i dont know that thats so accurate. its growing bit by bit. there are soccer exclusive stadiums that have gone up in LA, Chicago, and maybe some other MLS cities, and i know they are building one in Salt Lake for their team... its not the NBA or NFL, and probably never will be, but its getting more legit each season.

but a dumb move by beckham. hes doesnt need to be playing in the us, thats like a college player in a D3 school playing highschool... just lame

well, barcelona, arsenal and chelsea being the bets teams int he world, real madrid being merely an exhibition team for oldies and fatsies... good move on beckham for taking people's money...

last i heard they were losing money every year so..

they may be getting better but from what i hear i dont think theyre even breaking even

Those are warmup/reserve games for Chelsea, and Madrid or Chelsea are definitley not the best teams in the world right now. Im a huge Chelsea fan and hate to admit it but they are lagging due to injuries, players, coaching decisions, etc.

And about the Beckham thing that is rediculous. There are soooooooooooooooo many players better than him in the wide position alone that dont make close to that much money. Last I checked (2 years ago I think) the highest payed player in the world was Frank Lampard if I remember correctly, 9million pounds. Beckham probably would have been lucky to get half that if he stayed with Madrid, seeing how he's a second string player on any big club.

Beckham is definetly lacking compared to what he used to be. I remember as a kid living in England going to see a Chelsea, Man U game and Beckham was ridiculous. Nowadays though, it seems he doesnt have the same passion for the game he had as a younster. To me, it seems he is more interested in banging his hot ass wife and hanging out with all his hollywood posse. Thats still pretty sick though, and a smart move by LA, and the MLS, because it will no doubt fill the seats in LA and other cities, IE. Toronto FC, which is just starting up and is going to need a star attraction coming to play in order to get more attention. Lets face it, David Beckham is possibly one of the most universal figures who has played on two of the most recognizable teams in the world, no matter where he goes he will always attract attention. Oh ya, and if you want, you can PM for an invite to the Soccer Cult.

not really, soccer isnt is big in the US and probabaly never will be because we have so many big name sports that arew popular such as football, basketball, and baseball to name a few. the rest of the world pretty much focuses on soccer and thats it

I'm not a soccer expert but I find he doesn't have the magic touch anymore (IMO he kinda sucked at the World Cup), so 5 year contract?? I don't think so.

And I've heard rumors on Zidane going in the MLS but I can't remember where.

ok,.,, i played soccer for 8 years... and i realy regreat it.. its fuckin awful to se some parents living through there kids... but this is not gonna help the soccor scene in usa.... since the women won the world cup first.... that killed it for the usa... its a womens sport now.. bout as cool as wnba.. and in no way am i hating on the atlethitism of soccer and its a real sport and shit. but it will never get huge in usa. and also its becuse you can end in a tie. i mean FUCK that like having sex and then stoping before you spooge and then shaking her hand and saying... good game

Still to me in the World Cup, No man on England played with more heart. Yeah he has dropped a step, but I don't think you can say he lost his passion. Without him England would have been even worse than they were.

I hate it how so many sports players are going where the money is. Why not just play for the love of the game? You see alot of that in baseball but not so much in hockey anymore because of the salary cap. I think they should enforce a cap in baseball because I don't think a luxury tax cut's it.

Yes i would go see a game beacuse he's there, because i have never been able to go see a european match, it would be a chance to see a world-calibre (arguably i suppose) player....

and there already is a champions league for the america's......its seperate from UEFA CL, but the champs compete in the Fifa World Club Championship
