Beartooth Basin is for sale

Sad day for Beartooth Basin

I can't say I'm surprised, they've had a rough few years.

It seems unlikely to me that it'll sell and get reopened. There are plenty of regular ski resorts with plenty of snow that decide to close early since they lose money in the spring/summer. I don't see how a summer only ski area in the middle of nowhere can be a viable business

oh oops bumped an old thread before checking for a new one. bummed out about this, i hope it can keep going

Here’s hoping something can come out of the sale, but not looking great. Definitely one place I wish I could have skied

Was thinking of community fundraising in Bozeman as there is some sneaky money here involved in skiing but quickly remembered it’s probably many millions of dollars.

not to mention theyre probably selling it because its not really a money maker, and people with money only really care about making more money.

Ski areas should be open from Christmas until February, we must be sure to maximize profits for Alterra and Vail shareholders only, there is no need for a season to be as long as it is.

Don't leave your beloved POWDR corp out of this! Each year they come up with bullshit excuses to close Snowbird earlier than the year before. Honestly they probably love that the dust from the mine and wildfires fucks the snowpack. The sooner the snow's gone, the sooner they can start Oktoberfest

It's a bummer there's no population to serve with Beartooth. Every other summer skiing area is an hours drive from an international airport and near one or multiple big cities with plenty of other tourist destinations nearby. The Beartooths just don't get the right amount or right kind of traffic to make money.

gonna miss the place had some great times and met some really cool people up there. honestly might be one of my favorite areas i’ve ever skied. shoutout to the employees, seemed like nature was throwing everything at them over the past few years… covid, heat waves, wildfires, flooding, low snow

if it doesn’t reopen this place will be missed!

I have only had a few interactions with the current owner and he didn't seem to be very business minded. I could see someone buying it but with a different business model than the current one. With the rapid growth of Jr IFSA events, it could be a great place for a big mountain themed summer camp.

You don’t need lifts to ski off of Beartooth Pass, and never will. Car shuttling and short hikes are really what the place is about anyway.

I did dig the ON3P Skis Beartooth Summer Sessions. Those events were the only times I paid to ski there.

If you’re ever thinking about it, it’s always worth the drive. Don’t forget your skis!

Maybe for the people who live close by. Kinda sad they don't have local support, but now you guys will have way less people up there so maybe that's a good thing in your eyes.

Dang, that place is so sick. I hope somehow it keeps rolling. I'm glad I made it once. Was trying to help with the ON3P slopestyle a couple years but the snow didn't pan out. Finally made it a few years back.

If anyone wants to see some more pictures.

Really love it, made some good friends who I still run into. Was chillin with Alex at Mount hood and just now at Mammoth. Camped with him and some other chill people in dispersed camping down from the pass outside of Red Lodge.

Idk, place had a magical old school vibe. I hope it can go on. I understand if it doesn't, but that will be a sad day for skiing.

came here to post this. also, how much to build an underground lair and add a runway or helipad?

Adding a small runway would actually be pretty reasonable, it’s flat enough at the bottom for bush planes and such.

Honestly regardless on a good season might get a squad and do some of the car/hike laps.

Hope beartooth makes it out though. Fingers crossed.

Will do. Also work depending for me as well. If I go back to Hood eventually it'd line up decent. Or maybe a trip in late may early June before flying out for the season.

I'll def be eyeing the snow there and hoping to make it happen. Honestly just the chutes on that one road lap on the pass would be worth it and pretty easy to do. A couple of those a day and then some beers and grillin and chillin.

Still hoping they're able to keep the place open though. Sucks when a ski area goes under. Even a little one like beartooth.

I hope it gets picked up and its core ethos remains untarnished. It devastated me when SnowparkNZ went under and ended up becoming an Audi test area. It would be a shame for something like that to happen in what looks like a stunning park of the country.

I feel that. It was cool to drive by the old place but also def hurt. Maybe 10 years ago Dillion Ojo set it up and hit it with pretty much no snow on an NZ trip. I think they broke in kind of. Pretty Iconic shot/ feature/ place. RIP OJO and SNowpark NZ

They just don't like to keep that road open its always fucking closed. I was driving from Jackson WY to the east coast and right around the ski area the road was closed for roadwork (I don't know if I ignored warning signs or not this was a few years back) and my option was sleep in the car for 8 hours or double back and drive 3-4x as many miles. It was summer and dark at that point I had just almost killed myself hitting cows in the road leaving the park.

Sort of a bucket list trip to go back and ski it at some point. They should just put in a chair surface lifts only drive away rich people with $.

Dude, it's 2 surface lifts and a small food truck size deal they sell tickets out of. A couple of porto potties. It's not like there's a lodge or any infrastructure. Also considering all the years they haven't opened and less dependable snow, there's pretty much 0 chance they'd ever put in a chair there, not that they were ever really considering it.

Beartooth is kind of a core vibe. People do some race training there, bang through moguls, chuck meat off the cornice, etc. It's sort of a loose old school vibe. Dirt bag camping meeting cool weird people. Financially it would make know sense to build it up even to a small resort, but beyond that, it really isn't the vibe.

Kind of a have a beer and talk to some random folks, shred a while, have some lunch, shred some more, link up and do a road lap or two before sundown then head to red lodge or back to camp for some dinner and chillin. Place is def sick though. If it opens again it's worth a trip.
