Be Libertarian with me for ONE election -- Live Free

Fiscally conservative, socially liberal. Just look it up on wikipedia, it'll tell you everything you need to know.

Just the tip, just for a second, just to see how it feels. Next thing you know, she's pregnant. I see you, Gary Johnson.

Apart from the fact that you want Romney as a president, there's a BIG difference between libertarianism and anarchism...

sure, my Utopian society would have almost no government. but until that point, we have to recognize the constraints of the world we live in.

just like im sure your Utopia would be a perfectly functioning communist system, but as we both know we dont get 100% of what we want.

Not all libertarians believe in the same thing. Let's just clear that up.

I believe in government. I'm a "classic libertarian." The government exists to preserve my rights as a human. These rights will vary from person to person depending on who you ask.

However, this election is far too close for me to vote for my candidate of choice. I will be voting for the lesser of the two evils rather than for my own party. Not because I believe it is the right thing to do, but because I feel we will be even further away from my ideals if for some reason the wrong candidate did go into place. For me, in this election, social issues are more important. I understand there is an economic crisis, but I don't feel either candidate has the solution. But the place where change can be made is with social issues. That's where my vote will be.

its not a lolwut moment.

if she thinks social is more important theres nothing wrong with it. i just wanted to know which social issues she thinks are more important.

fair enough.... i just can't help but relate it too my life experience...

after a failed investment in june of 2011 i went 12 grand into debt... ask me how important social things were to me then? i think of our country in the same way, just on a larger scale... and even though i personally am now out of debt..... its gonna be a lot harder for the us to pay it's shit down...

I'm voting for Rocky Anderson, but I'm a registered Libertarian and voted for Johnson in the primary.

That's the one!

Not sure if I'll actually even BE ABLE to vote for him here in California though. The extent to which the two party system controls our elections should be offensive to anyone who cares about democracy.

Rocky is the man. But i feel like running for president is a waste of his time. Don't get me wrong he'd kill it if he won, and he has the right to run but Obama and Romney both with have spent like a billion each come November. Restrictions on campaign finance need to happen so people like Rocky, Johnson, ron paul, and others can have a voice. Otherwise the white house will continue to go to the highest bidder.

Obviously, that criticism applies to every and all 3rd party candidates under the current systems. Don't get me wrong, we need to fight to change how our elections work and loosen the grip the 2 parties have on our democracy, but that's going to be a loooooooong and difficult process, and in the meantime I'm going to vote for Rocky Anderson.

I think the government needs to back the fuck out of what a woman can and can't do with her body. I also think they need to back out of gay marriage. But since neither of those things are going to happen, I'd rather have laws to protect these things than laws against. I also think religion is something people should keep to themselves. I don't want it in my government. I don't mind if there are historical references or traditions, but modern law should not include it. But again, since they aren't going to remove laws, I'd prefer the law protect everyone's right to choose to have it or not regardless of what it is.

Economics for me is a tricky thing. I'm self reliant. Pay my taxes, only have student loan debt which I'm paying. I pay for my insurance. I work my fucking ass off. I don't own a car or buy nice clothing. I cook my own food. I think people need a lesson on what it means to be fiscally responsible and need to learn to accept the blame for their losses. Until this country starts putting emphasis on individual responsibility I don't see us going anywhere regardless of what laws go into place. To me, neither major side has a better option.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the core of libertarian social policy the belief that people are capable of making rational decisions? It seems like a great philosophy for normal, intelligent people, but then there's the masses of idiots who would die off in a heartbeat without Uncle Sam's helping hand...not that there's anything wrong with that.

I think libertarian's views are loosely defined and vary from hipster to hipster.

If by "loosely defined" you mean lie on a three-dimensional gradient and vary from person to person like all political philosophies, then yes. I'm asking about "textbook" libertarian social policy.

1000x this. However...I can't in good conscience contribute to a party or a candidate that is so undeniably fucked up. I totally understand why informed people will still go for the lesser of two evils route.. but I personally just can't. I'm just old enough to remember life pre-2001 and seeing both parties steer the country in the same shit hole direction is enough for Gary Johnson to get my vote...even though it probably means nothing.

Im really only old enough to remember the last 3 elections well, i was two young to understand anything when Clinton was elected...every election in my memory, people have said the same thing "ehhh....I'll just vote for the lesser of two evils i guess"

how has that worked out?

abortion is legal in all 50 states, and has been for a while. this is a non issue.

gay marriage is a states right issue, like it should be. another non issue.

Libertarianism/monetarism etc. is founded on a volatile, elementarily, and simply head splittingly ignorant view of human nature. A libertarian society looks fancy on paper (as does every other "-ism"), however the resulting world will be so forgone from the civilization we are experiencing, you would not even be able to begin to imagine. I don't know about this guy, but Ron Paul's Government cuts amount to about 80% of the current system. FUCK THAT. I wouldn't want to imagine a world where US infrastructure and public services are diminished by even 5%. It's too bad most of the people that support libertarianism are 17 year old's that live with their parents and play video games all day and go on Reddit, they are people that don't fully grasp the role and purpose of government in civil society, or have lost all faith in any kind of social democratic value/fundamentals.

I mean for all the things that you are given in life, being an upper middle class youth that experiences the exclusive privilege of regularly participating in action sports, It's pathetic to think that so many of you could be so disillusioned.

The first two things I would do if Ron Paul was elected.

1. Purchase multiple firearms

2. Lock all doors

The people that piss me off the most are the ones that are electing him simply to legalize marijuana.

"be a libertarian this time, think for yourself....but stop analyzing the other candidates and just vote for me"
