So for everyone that somehow hasn't seen or heard of it, BASE skiing is the act of jumping off insanely huge cliffs and then tossing out a parachute so that you survive. reputably started by James Bond, but picked up recently by Shane and JT among other skiers.

What do you guys think of this? Personally, i think that BASE Skiing was cool when it started, but now it might be getting kinda stagnant, as shown in Yearbook. BASE skiing was really impressive, but the effect has worn off, and I'd rather see someone land a backflip off a 60 footer than a double front off a 1000 footer with a parachute.

I know BASE skiing is really risky and dangerous, but having a parachute is kinda like an easy way out. I dont think that its going to lead to a revolution like twin tips did, and that all the hype that its getting and all the playtime it gets in MSP's movies is really over the top. Sticking drops without a parachute may be old and classic, but to me, thats what skiing big lines and backcountry is really about.

sometimes when im running water to wash dishes or something, i think about how lucky i am to have such simple access to running water and how some people will never know such a simple pleasure.

then i let it run for awhile, just because i can.

 
I agree. It seemed amazing the first time I saw it, but now that theyve been showing it so much its lost its 'wow factor'. It would have been good for a one time stunt or something, but they drag it out too far.

 
Yeah, for anyone who has Yearbook, check out Shanes alternate segment in the additional features menu, its so much better than the one in the movie just cause it has less BASE skiing and more actual skiing.

I think if people want to do it that's cool but it should no longer be extensively documented in movies

the reason they started doing it was because they wanted to ski lines that couldn't be skiied before because of massive cliffs at the end of them. but it seems like they do it just to jump off the cliff. i haven't seen any sick lines and then a jump, just jumping. if they combined the two like they originally planned it would be sick.

It sbasically just base jumping... just you have skis on. How is this different from base jumping?

I dont have anything against BASE jumping, i actually would probably be doing it if i couldnt ski for some reason. Plain BASE jumps are sick, no doubt, its just that when you mix it with skiing, you lose the magic for some reason. Seperately, the two are incredible, but mixing them jsut doesnt work as well as all the filmmakers want it to be.

Just out of curiosity, are there any BASE jumping videos anyone could reccommend?

i hated it the first time i saw mconkey open up his parashuet. i was like yes he skied off a huge cliff and now hes going to die and end his lack luster carrier. then the parashuet opend and i was like o man hes gunna live. jj but i do dislike parashuets and skiing mixed

i wouldnt kno but i guess its like sky diving, fun as fuck, but not something that you really want to watch alot

Cool but it gets old fast. It pretty much the same thing as base jumping which warren miller has beaten to death. It something I would do in a heart beat but an not about do make a habit out of it. You go all they way up there only to hang in a parachute.

 
Yearbook, Yearbook, Yearbook.....yeah everything was going great and then i saw someone huck themselves of a massive cliff, things started to get even better, then the parachute opened, things got worse from here. Once was cool, neato, i said. By the time the twentieth minute of that skiachuting shit passed i was ready to turn it off. Really fuckin boring to watch for more than like 3 jumps. I would have enjoyed jerking off with broken glass in my hand more than having to watch that shit over again.
