Balancing Money & Skiing

Hi all,

So I’m at a weird point in my life. I turned 21 this year and frankly it’s been the most confusing year of my life. Not to victimize myself but a lot of shit has happened. I lived in a closet to save money, halfway dropped out of college, my girlfriend and I of 2+ years broke up, I got into a car accident, and I have now moved back in with my parents in MN from OR where I had been for the last 3 years.

I’m back home just trying to relax and hang out with old friends as much as possible. I’m working a pretty chill job at a local coffee shop and just trying to focus on myself. My family has been good and supportive I’m lucky to have them.

All this being said I’m at a spot where I can kind of decide what my next step is. I was going to school for 5 semesters majoring in math. I’m thinking of transferring to a college closer to home (Duluth) and trying to get into their Mech Eng program. I’ve been accepted into the school but not the program. I think it would be good for my mental to be a bit closer to home and my support system and yet another part of me wants to move to SLC or Bozeman and possibly continue out there. The price is holding me back as well though.

What are y’all’s dream jobs? What’s something I could do that would allow me to travel to different places for months or so at a time?

I’d say my “dream” layout goes something like this (will probably try to spend my 20s doing so)

-MN July-Aug

-TRAVEL Sept

-SLC mid October-mid Nov

-MN mid Nov-Dec

-SLC/CO/BC Jan-April (or other big mountain skiing)

-Hood May-June

I also know I will want a wife and family some day so I am trying to figure out a way to start saving money so in 5-8 years I could have a down payment on property or a house.

I was talking to a guy that is a heavy equipment engineer for a paving company and has winters completely off. I think this would be super awesome. I’d probably do this and then just take a van or something out west for the winter.

I like building things and design and I’m good at math so I think engineering would be cool. I’m also into somewhat expensive projects and hobbies like cars and shit as well.

Have how you guys been? Is the future weighing on your minds? What kind of plans do you guys have set up? What jobs are you working/working towards? Are you going to school or no?

I know it’s been an incredibly tough year for all and there are times I need to focus on the good a lot more than I do.

Y’all are loved!

If you're good at math and like building things. Get a CS degree. Jobs pay $$$ and you can work remote and ski when you want.

see I was thinking that until until I took an intro CS course … coding is hard as fuck and I go a bit crazy sitting at a computer for hours trying to figure out what is going wrong haha

Yo I really hope your able to figure something out, best of luck man.

Do not go to Bozeman, you do not have enough money to survive.

seriously, housing is the tightest it’s ever been. It’s crazy expensive. Your paycheck will not go far. It would be irresponsible to move there without a job & housing lined up, even if that’s to go to school as well.

You want to have a family?? good luck, you can’t afford a down payment if you didn’t put one down years ago. I love din BZN for 8 years and left a few months ago. It is irresponsible to move there.

Damn, too bad to hear this. I was talking to some friends who live out there and they were saying similar things.

I do have quite a few friends out there, one is pretty well off and his dad actually bought a house that he rents with his friends so I have some connections. Seems like a really fun place. I would like to spend some time out there before the housing market totally crashes.

I definitely wouldn’t go without having everything lined up though.

My dream job? Flying waterbombers. The pay is great, the flying is sick, and you get winters off. Its a bit of a slog to get there, but should be flying spotting in my late 20s, so hopefully in a tanker by my early thirties. And if ya need extra $$, there's always opportunities to go to Australia or South America for their fire season. It's not hard to find cool jobs in aviation, most dudes in the industry seem to be trying to find steady work out of one base, so if you're flexible and willing to do seasonal/contract shit, there's tons of opportunity.

That’s sick! A friend of mine flew out to Oregon this year from NY to do firefighting. Some of the stories he told me were crazy. Sounded like some of the most brutal days ever, but I’m sure it varies from day to day. Going to be something we need more and more though; fires have been bad as you surely know.

Yeah, it sucks that fire season is only gonna get worse, but it does mean much more employment for people wanting that kind of work!

Hey OP I just graduated from a mech eng. degree a couple years ago, I'm up in Canada so a few aspects of it might be different but if you have any questions hmu

I’m gonna tell you what I wish I heard a long time ago: get into salesforce.

The pay is great and you can teach yourself entirely through their “trailhead program” online (you only pay for the actual tests). It’s the number one crm in the world and it’s in huge demand - from salesforce itself and companies using it. If you have a mathematical brain, you will probably enjoy it because a lot of setting up and fixing things is like a math problem but without the mind numbing frustration of raw coding.

And the biggest plus - a lot of these jobs allow you to work remotely. Just my 2 cents. I love working with salesforce. It’s allowing me to move to Denver next month.

I think you have a good mind on your shoulders. I’m an engineering student at penn state, I wish I was good at math. The only deterrent for engineering is the course loads really, but you’re good at math so you shouldn’t have to worry too much. I think it’ll be a good gig if I can get in with the right people, I’ll make enough to pay the bills and put gas in my car for ski trips or hotels somewhere. Plus you’ll be making enough to cover for your future wife and kids, which is another reason why I’m doing it. If you get in with a lenient place you could probably get a lot of time off in winter and bust your ass to no end the other 6 months to make up for it, like you said about the guy you know who gets time off in the winter. If you like building and designing stuff I think you’ll be happy with engineering. Good luck my friend

I would suggest not trying to plan too much. You can’t possibly predict what decisions you’ll need to make, which opportunities will arise and who the people are that you meet.

Life is not a simple staircase where one step inevitably leads you to the next. It’s an incomprehensible maze and you just gotta do your best.

Just one example for you- I graduated in 2009 with a degree in math and planned to go to grad school after one season of being a ‘ski bum’ - after a year i realized I wasn’t ready to commit to 5-6 more years of intense studying. So I landed a coaching job and jammed on that for a few seasons while spending the summer renting cars on Martha’s Vineyard. Then I randomly got a job invite to be a sushi chef at an awesome restaurant and after a couple more years got a job offer for a private accounting/finance company. There is no way to predict that sort of thing or to plan for it.

In ten years, I guarantee you’ll look back and be amazed at how seemingly innocuous events and decisions you made resulted in you being wherever you are and doing whatever it is you’re doing. The best you can do is to work hard (at whatever it is you’re doing at that time) and try to make the best choice one move at a time. Just move where you want to be and take a job. Be good at it and see what happens! In the meantime, have fun and keep yours eyes peeled for new opportunities.

I'm in the same boat with you I just turned 20 and the advise I have been given is do what you want as much a you can because there comes a time when you won't be able to. Also I think it's a good thing to plan ahead but just try not to stress over it as long as you have a direction it will all work out.

Definitely refrain from planning your future too much. Think big picture. Family, career path, and where you’ll live are all important things to consider, but even so, don’t get to caught up in that. As you can tell based on your last year, life throws a lot of curveballs. I say do what you really want to do now and see where life takes you (even if it means moving somewhere expensive). Things will always fall into place.

honestly I just work on the mountains and do a bunch of skiing during winter. then during summer I head back home work in a surf shop save up money. and go surfing all summer. Then repeat all over again. living the dream.

You're 21 man. I know that sounds old because it's the oldest you've ever been, but you're still pretty young.

By all means try and figure out some plans, but don't stress it too hard.

People are different. You can dive right into a career and try and save for a house, you can ski bum it you can do a mix of both. If you wanna stay local send it, if you want to go to slc send it.

Everyone is different. The best thing i ever did was get out of my hometown and off the east coast in general. I have plenty of friends that live in their hometowns, always, have, always will and they love it.

There's no right path for everyone. Obviously that's tough because you want some answers and reassurance that you're doing the right thing.

Best thing I can tell you is to do shit that makes you happy either now or where you want to end up ir better both. If something doesn't work out you can always make a change.

Do what works for you and have some fun aling the way. You're young, the world is your oyster. Send it my dude!

This sounds really cush my dude. I would like to check out the Wildland Fire gig as well but as a Type I possibly if I can train-up this spring or figure out something along those lines. Would like to put my EMT Basic to use in a cool way and not just ambulances also, or just do resource management for the forest service and cut down trees all over.

I also want to say you should go and get visas to australia and New Zealand while you’re young. You can’t get a work holiday visa to either country after you’re 30. It’s a seriously worthwhile experience moving to either country and skiing and working. Do it. You won’t regret it. Moreso you’ll regret not doing more of that when you’re over 30

I’m 21 in slc rn, posting this from the big red snake coming down lcc. I came out here for school at the university of utah, which has a good engineering program(I’m in cs) and is cheaper than a lot of other schools. The cost of living out here is also generally pretty low, rent isn’t very high compared to other parts of the country (like Oregon). Also slc is less mormon than youd expect there’s plenty of ragers.

Go teach in Japan.

Endless pow.

The end.

I was thinking of this as well, I would need to graduate from college first though.

I actually took 2 years of Japanese in college because I had thought about this exact thing. I wanted to study abroad but unfortunately had bad grades and it was holding me back.

Scoot.... coming from the other side..(66 yrs).... believe it or not, money will not fix everything in your future... can make some decisions easier, but it's not end all when you look back....best advice I read/heard/believe is: do what you love.

Period. Do what you love. Cuz if you're making dope money and you hate it, won't matter, the rest of the time you'll hate your job and it will show.... second, you're young as shit....do you and your mental first, get that straight before you plan the next 50 years... it'll make the switch to "your adult years" easier (no regrets)... Boseman has a ton of ski jobs posted and they offer housing (jes tossing that in)... when you do settle down a wife with a income makes the bill paying easier... do you want to be rich or happy (i know both are possible but less so)... next, if Math is a thing, international teaching is a way to travel to distant lands ( shit ton of money in South Korea... they have snow, Japan, etc)

I've had toooonns of different jobs, elementary teaching didn't make me rich but no two days were the same and that's what made me stick... Life is a fucking joy ride if you take time to look around, realize you're not alone, help others along the way, ski, get knocked down and get back up, .... not a single guarantee to be found

I've struggled financially but I don't let it define me and guess what? this old dog fell into a dream job that involves teaching, skiing and some money and all the planning in the world had nothing to do with it....

LIFE!!!!!!? YES!

Thank you, it's just been a weird time for me. Like part of me knows that life goes how it goes and I need to just try my best and do what I enjoy but another part of me wants all of these grand plans to layout which I know is unrealistic. Thank you for your words!! Glad you are working your dream job :).

I used mine for both. Inky was in each for 4 months but had awesome times. If covid wasnt fucked id have been back in Aus the last 2 summers. Hopefully next year or ill just go back to hood.

Seriously though soooo many people don't take advantage of these visas. It's pretty friggin cool. If you can send it you should send it

I agree! It’s literally fucking FREE for Americans to New Zealand to get the visa. Why not???

Also you’re just BLATANTLY wrong. I have traveled quite a bit internationally during covid. The world has made every effort to accommodate the anti-vaxxer. You take a test and you quarantine.

No. A visa is different. You don’t automatically get a visa when you go somewhere. You mistake your Privilege of having a USA passport and visa agreements with having a visa

14333498:OldStoke said:
You do mean Passports don't you?

The stamps you receive entering and exiting to me would be your visa... usually for a set number of days, Honduras and Guatemala are 90 days, get another stamp for 90 more then you have to split.

Each country is different so aus,etc has, what 4 months?

Crazy how fucked shit has gotten in a lot of the "inexpensive" places out west. Got a good career job right out of college, remote so I can work wherever. Get paid substantially more than minimum... and then I look at prices to even rent out in slc or montana or even idaho ffs and shit is insane.

I'm on the higher end of income for my age bracket, but anywhere out west that I would like to move to would be putting me living off of paychecks and putting 0 into savings. So I guess I'll stick around in the U.P. for a few more years. Can't complain about paying 300$ a month while still getting to ski some good snow.

But seriously though, all of these shitty studio apartments that are 900$ plus a month are unreal in all the places.

Duluth is a great city, before the border closed down we drove down on the regular from Thunder Bay. Great biking and campground at Spirit Mtn.

Plan long term and find a career that gets you retired nice and early. Doctor, dentist, lawyer, engineer…that kind of thing. Just stay away from the programs hippies take. You’ll be skiing everyday after 50 with your kids and grandkids. You’re 21, 10 years of school, 15-20 years of work and you’ll be set for life if you invest well. After a certain point, all that matters is how much time you get to spend with your kids, family and friends.

Best of luck.

This!!! probably one of the best ways to make amazing money(60k starting) with being able to ski as much as you desire. With covid, more tech companies and developers have made it easier to work remote. You can always work as your own contractor with CS or coding, setting your own hors and rate.

Ive been looking into this a lot this fall. My dad has a friend in Bend that would hire people straight out of coding camp (8 week) for 60k a year.

Yeah for sure. I think Aus was like 400 aud but whatever. I got fucked for Australia though. Had to go and get an xray for fucking tuberculosis like it was 1920. Also couldn't getbit anywhere, had to go to a specific spot. Seemed like a fucking racket honestly. A special "travel doctor" place kr something. Was pissed and found a urgent cate in reno that would be 130 i think. Not stoked but whatever. Instead had to drive all the way to fucking Oakland and spend 470. Super lame. Clearly i did not have tuberculosis. But whatever it was sick and i have a job there if i cam ever go back post covid. They'll sponsor my visa and pay for my flights.

But yeah super worth it to take advantage of traveling. Those visas are sick because you can work without being sketchy. When i was working in Africa and southeast Asia it was under the table and technically illegal. Cool to legit kist be able to bartend or do whatever. I wish i had aeen more of NZ. Still trying to get back. But i had fun.

just Dm on the gram! I can get more info from my dad. The friend my have retired or sold but the company is still there.

Also my cousin works a mechanical engineering job in Superior. I went up a few times when he was still at UMD. They have a great snowboard/ski community up there.

yeah when I was 18 I tried to go and work I. Austria. Really wish like I hell I know of NZ visa. Would have jumped on that in a minute. I had such a good time in AUS. NZ was cool but aus was really fun. More snow too

Nah not really. And no as far as medical records. Just got unlucky lol.

Austria would be sick. I had jobs lined up in Austria and Germany with schneestern a few years back. Visa didnt come through in time either time so had to bail. Was pretty guyted because scheestern is pretty friggin legit for europe psrks. One of the jobs was the nesselwang park in germany. That woukd have been sick. Small hill but that was when redbull and others sponsored it and they had wild setups. Police station, upside down cop car, etc.

Some day ill work in europe maybe.

At least ive been far more places than i ever dreamed.

Doesn’t seem to be the way I would want to end up but they’re probably saying the same about me. Life is a hard thing to figure out.

I meant to write australia but autocorrect got me. That got me thinking though: Schneestern has quite a presence in finland. Why don’t you try and work somewhere like Finland (that has really great parks and a great park scene) than somewhere super saturated like Austria?

It was the job that was offered was more going for schneestern not really country specific. Last few years I've been trying to dial in my skills and cat time. Hopefully I'm not to old to go somewhere cool again.

Antarctica is a mega in the list though. Also one of my mates grooming in Australia had done a year down there. He was a rookie for ski industry but had learned some shit on the ice, and knew equipment well. Idk. I'm more than satisfied with the places I've gone but name I'd love to go everywhere.

just Dm on the gram! I can get more info from my dad. The friend my have retired or sold but the company is still there.

Also my cousin works a mechanical engineering job in Superior. I went up a few times when he was still at UMD. They have a great snowboard/ski community up there.

I just might!

Oh word! That's great to hear. I've gone up there a few times recently and while there are things I don't love it does seem like a pretty decent outdoors community.

Hey man so I’m not really the greatest person for advice as I have not been there before. However, if you like building things and math you might find an interest in Computer Aided Design. Definitely a pathway to become an engineer. It’s not a skill that’s too hard to master. I learned it in middle school when my dad brought a 3D printer, now I’m the expert in my house, and possibly the expert at my school. It’s also similar to learning a coding language, where learning one program helps you learn another pretty quick. I would recommend checking out OnShape. It’s free and pretty intuitive.

best of luck man!

Also SLC lowkey full of hotties right?

Best of luck bro, definitely not a bad idea to go to school somewhere close to help get you on the right track without having to deal with insanely high prices. I'm 19, I kind of decided to do the same thing. I was all set to go out to Bozeman and just work my ass off to try to offset the price of the school. Decided to focus more on what im passionate about and now im going to a way cheaper film school 20 minutes from my house. Missing some of the "college experience" definitely sucks but I've got the time and now the extra money to ski and travel as much as my school schedule will let me.

It's fun to travel for sure, but I'd recommend spending more time in one place. It will be easier to save $ that way, and it's really great to exlore what's around you more in-depth too. It gets old pretty fast when your things are scattered across 4 different places and you're never fully unpacking.

I'd recommend going to school for a trade, like heavy equipment (obvious practical engineering applications here)- the program will be cheaper, won't take much time considering the skills you'll come out with, and as you mentioned you can get a job that pays well and put some money away. Then after a few years you can go through university and pick up less debt, whilst going in with some practical experience.

I work at a small family craft business in the summer, manage a snow school in a different province in the winter and do work as a freelance artist. So I move twice a year and sometimes travel in between for my freelance work.

I would say I've learned a similar amount from work experience as I did at University.

I know a lot people who do tree planting and wildfire fighting which are good options for banking money and staying in great shape, and you see a lot of wilderness. Might be these are jobs that pay better in Canada though because I don't here much about them from folks in the States, other than prisoners doing them.

I’ve heard similar stories from lots of people, but I do know some that make it work. I have some friends that are sleeping in literal closets that hardly fit a bed just to make it by

For sure, this is more of a “you cannot wing living in BZN” gotta have a few things set in. Place. Could probably find a job but finding an affordable room is tough at the moment, like most places.
