Backyard Rail - Final Update

Some of your may remember that backyard rail project that I began back in the fall. Well, its finally done, and it’s sick! I made my first rail in the summer. It was a flat rail, and it turned out decently. I sold it for $50! Anyway, after that, I decided to make a double kinked 15 foot rail for myself. Here it is:

The frame of the rail is made of 2x4’s and 1x2’s. The sides are made of waferboard. I plan on painting them in the future. The grinding surface is made of ¼ inch thick lexan. The lexan is attached with countersunk screws. The rail has 8 wedges helping it stay upright. It is also anchored to the ground with four 12” galvanized steel spikes. The whole completed thing weighs in at 150 pounds and took 2 people to move from my garage to my backyard. The whole thing cost me about $70 Cnadian to make (keeping in mind that I got the lexan for free from my schools shop lab).

This is a picture of the half complete frame to give you an idea of what it looks like inside:

I can’t wait for some snow so that I can hit it!

Some time in the near future, I’m going to create a detailed guide on how to build on of these babies…step by step!

yeah, that looks sweet, i took your rail plans, i have a 16 ft, 2-kinker of your design in my yard right now, waiting for metal coping!!!

What has a whale done for you lately?

thats really sweet i did almost the same thing but i used a piece of metal tracking instead of the surface that you used. also i used leg things like an outrigger canoe for support but i like your idea of metal spikes to anchor it better

keep up the good work.

My double kink? Cost me about $45 (american) for the lumber, and I don't quite know how much coping I need yet, so I don't know how much that will be.

What has a whale done for you lately?

not to shabby...im thinkin of constructing a step down rail about 15 feet long, post the instruction on the way u built ur double kinker mauii. im also goin to make a straight welded rail hopefully over christmas vaca

yeah i welded a sick rail over thanksgiving break. its about 14 feet long and 3-4 feet off the ground. made from 3 inch diameter steel pipes. definately takes more than one person to move around. it looks like this

steal steel pipes they r sick to grease just like the ones at ski hills... plus they r so ez to set up.

TRY EVERYTHING EVEN IF IT MEANS, KICKING YOUR OWN ASS

I went to the hardware store for some PVC pipe and the people followed me around the whole time. They kept asking me if I needed help. It was pretty funny carrying around 2 ten foot pipes.

that's so awsm, we just stole the rails i have in my backyard...heh... i dont know how to make one, it was just easier this way..heheh

just steal a few bike racks from your local corner store....they already have a nice heavy base :) all you have to do is check for sharp little pieces of metal on the rail and file them down if there are any....

as can be seen, bike racks are a great way to have a cheap rail

we made rails like that last year for snowskating, we made a rollercoaster, a rainbow and a pretty big C rail. they work pretty good.

'Well... You.. Look pretty easy and you might put out, so roll in the cream cheese, roll in the cream cheese!'

hey where can you get coping? and do you have to weld it or can you just use screws or something
