Backies

alright, backflips are probably the most requested trick tip on the site, but even after reading all the threads, i still think i need some help. I've worked this summer on gainers and backs off of the cliffs by my house, and on my friend's diving board, and i've got it kinda halfway. when i'm standing backwards (ass towards pool/ocean), i can throw pretty decent, layed out backflips, but when i go for the running gainer/ doing a normal backflip on the divingboard, it's like 4/5 time i end up stopping my rotation straight into a like dive, so i don't get my feet back around underneath me. so, if i want to take this thing onto snow, i kinda want to be able to not land on my teeth...

any tips?

should i try learning backflips in the halfpipe before taking them to a kicker?

i just learned how to throw these properly on tramps last week,

the key is it's all in the hips, if you shift them forward, you float forward, and if you shift your hips back, your gonna go back.

but you only do this for like the first part of your flip(1/4), then tuck in and flip cause your now moving forward and you need the rest of that flip (3/4) to get around!

although i'm not sure if it's the same on snow, friend told me basically everything you can do on tramps you can do on snow so yea...

Thats true but you have to remember that while skiing your feet are gonna be a lot heavier and your skis are gonna provide a lot of rotational resistance. In my opinion the best way to overcome this in not to throw a whole harder(but you are gonna have to throw a bit harder), but to make sure to use all your muscles to keep your body balanced, compact, and in control.

But as far as backflips go in my experience commitment is the biggest thing. And if your having trouble with underrotating just made sure to pull your knees forward and up to your chest, and always keep looking straight backwards over your head.

This is just my opinion though...and even I don't necessarly trust me!

They are exactly the same as a trampoline. If you can do them on a tramp you can do them on skis.

step 1: do about 500 on the tramp

2: do them with ankle weights on the tramp (to simulate the weight of boots and skis)

3. sack up and huck one

Funny thing about backies, I cant do them on tramps, but i can do them really well on jumps (up to 50 footers...CLAIMERZZZ!).

I dont think being able to do tricks on tramps is a prerequisite although it definitely helps. I learnt backies, mistys and rodeos off of backcountry pow jumps.

well for 1, I would not normally help you learn a back flip over the internet.(parents frown on this stuff)2 you are right in saying that it is a very comen question and a must in upping trick progres .3 I should tell you to go join a club like Blackcomb freestyle and take the right steps4 but im sure like half of us on this site your going to go out with some friends and try it anyway on some bc booter.
But if I was going to tell ya, this it what I might say
1) make sure you have got it some where els. Just so you know what it feel like.(ie, pool, tramp, bed, rope swing)
2) Build a pow booter with a good landing
3) Make sure the jump has plenty of kick. Not some 30ft gap. Make sure you jump trany is long and does not super flex you ski . Just a nice 3 or 4 foot moggel kicker 5 feet to the landing. If at all possible make it like a table top not a step down.
4)Dont build it so far in the bc you cant get help, if your friend dives head first into your last bomb hole and checks out your Fd
5)Make friends with the kid that can so you can watch him first.
6)Fill in your bomb holes , not from the same snow in the landing
7)Text your mom tell you love her
8)DONT SLING THAT CRAP so hard you hit your head on the take off
9)DONT FORGET TO POP
10) POP,TUCK, SPOT, OPEN
almost every kid iv ever seen do a back flip ether sticks it or over rotates it the first time. Then they get all cocky and poop the bed on the next few because they stop thinking about.
So remember have respect for the trick or it'll get bite ya

turpin...i know ur a whis local so i will ask you...wind lip on 7th heaven a good place to learn flips? or do you think a steep landing would be better

They send a groomer through that windlip everynow and then cos theres always some sucker that decides to backflip there (and smokes themselves). Wander out to Lakeside bowl and build a jump out that way...its where I learned em!

i figured i didn't want to make a new thread so ill just ask it here. is there an good way to learn backies on tramp? i have som kind of mental barrier, like i can't get further than landing my back. i feel like this is stopping me from learning flatspins, rodeos and stuff like that too, so it would be really nice to get an answer.

backies are the epitome of kewl

might be easier to try them into a pool and fall back and finish the rotation under water. Really the whole mental barrier thing is overcome with just saying fuck it and going for it.

Learnt these today off the small board at my pool but iv only done them back to the pool. First try I didnt really get the full rotation and went in nearly head first but after I got to the feeling it felt really easy and can put a 180 in there too.

Gonna try them fowards next time. I take it taking a little leap forwards is worthwhile rather than just standing still and bouncing?

Also anybody got any tips for stopping myself going off-axis when spinning. I tend to go corked when I try spins of the high board. I can get 5s pretty much all the time and a 7 if I go for it but I dont wanna really spin any more because im going crazy off axis if I really throw it and tend to get bitchslapped by the water :(
