Here is a link to video I made from a recent day of backcountry skiing at the Lions, above Lions Bay near Vancouver. Started on a narrow, steep ridge dropped down the west face into some glades. all Helmet cam footage.

Thanks for posting that.

Being a kid from the east, icy, short Ontario to be exact, can you tell me a little bit about what it's actually like up there? How fast is it in pow like that? How would one start skiing backcounty? I swear I'll be out there soon but I don't want to get owned right off the bat. Any advice?
 
Find some friends who have experience, plan on getting an avy rescue setup and take a few courses. The rest is just a hike.
 
Good advice.I wanted to go back and edit my NS post to include something about safety but I can't, so I add a bit.Be careful of some people who say they a lot of experience. There's a lot of wannabe experts out there.You need a beacon, probe, and shovel and the knowledge and experience how to use them. Some people who never took a course have become very knowledgeable but it is so much easy, and fastest to take a good 3 day course to start.
Although I did not, always travel in groups of 3 or more. Less than 3 should never be! Do as I say, not as I do. A lot of planning, and careful consideration went into my day out, not to mention lots of training and experience. I had a back up plans, an emergency plan, and gear. I waited for a good day to do it.

thats awesome,so dope on te narrow part. my dad has always talked about going up there one day at skiing it, inever knew anyone had the same idea/
 
That was easily the best ski footage I've ever seen, EVER!

I dream of skiing at places like that. Sooo perfect. Good song for the terrain too! Good work, good skiing, get more up!!!

I understand the advantage of 3 people, but often I am out with just a friend. Assuming you follow safe protocol (one at a time skiing down, cross anything suspect one at a time, safe zone to safe zone etc) I don't see how 2 people is a huge risk. Also big groups can also be a liability (groupthink, people getting pushed out of comfort zone, large loads on a slope even when people spread out etc).

Great vid, snow looks nice quality too for being that close to Van. How long a drive from the city is the trailhead and how long is the ascent?
 
That looked like SOOOO much fun! And the exact reason I want to move to BC. Just a couple of questions:

- How far from Van is this?

- About how many vert. feet do you think?
 
Amazing! The Lions are my backyard. I have lived in Lions Bay my entire life but have only been up there in the summer. I often scope lines from my deck out of boredom. Congrats on the trip, it looked like an amazing time. How did you find your way back to the trail? It looked like you were getting fairly low in the trees. I will have to make it up there later in the season. I enjoyed your TR on Brunswick also.
