Backcountry.com sold

pretty quiet deal went down when backcountry.com sold for extremely cheap to TSG. they have had many mishaps since 2019. they wanted to go into 'fast fashion' by creating their own line of brands and as part of doing so they sued a bunch of small companies for the trademark which ultimately led huge public backlash and to their ceo being canned. then these brands had poor quality and the fit wasnt great so they were mostly liquidated and sold for 60-80% off. they also went with storefronts in LA with their brands and some top selling items of the bigger names and that also failed. bunch of kooks from fashion ruining the roots of the company that was embedded in being a gear hub for outdoorsy people. fast fashion fuckin sucks.

the new parent company is TSG who also owns pabst blue ribbon, canyon bikes, brewdog (have their NA beers in my fridge right now lol), planet fitness, vitamin water, and a bunch of other brands. hopefully this will be good for backcountry.com as theyve been a bunch of cunts lately. imma let it pan out a bit before i hop on their site again though. here's to hoping they can pass the vibe check again ?

one things for sure though, im an idiot for referencing the wrong purchaser lol

lol it happens.

Apparently CSC Generation’s thing is buying distressed companies. Let’s see where it goes…

A while ago Rubbermaid bought the parent company of bunch of ski companies. K2, Line, Volkl ect. Idk what any of that has to do with spatulas. 2015. Don't know if they still have their fingers in that pie. Don't care enough to check.

So I worked for a company (now out of business) back in 2017 when Backcountry went through their first round of lawsuits. We were called Backcountry Pursuit (admittedly a terrible name), an outdoor gear consignment store in Boise. We only sold used gear from local private sellers, no new equipment whatsoever. So it's not like we were really cutting into Backcountry.com's profits, like anyone who's looking for used stuff probably isn't gonna pay new prices unless that's the only option. Anyway the owner was super stubborn and decided to fight the lawsuit and dumped a bunch of money into it (instead of changing the name like we all told him to do, again it was a terrible name to begin with). Obviously this went nowhere and he eventually had to change the name to the far superior Boise Gear Collective, but he remained a dumbass and pissed all his money away on his camper van and whitewater rafts and other dumb shit, and closed the store in 2022.

So all this to say, Backcountry started doing this shit a few years before most people actually realize. In 2019 when the CEO was under fire for all this he came out to Boise and set up a deal where a certain percentage of all returns back to Backcountry.com ended up going to our shop, but it was pretty clearly just a way to try to save their reputation. I think that deal lasted a year.

Good riddance Backcountry.com

Long live Evo

idk about when rubbermaid owned them but they currently own 4 outdoor companies including marmot and coleman so that seems to fit with K2, line, FT (rip ?), etc. but yeah seems like csc focuses on some heavily wounded companies to revive. seems pretty risky but backcountry once had a fairly large market presences that was killed by their ethics and antics. so in theory, so long as the reputation isn’t beyond repair, they could get back to that old market value again. i would think to do that you would flex real hard the new owners and a pivot away from the shit storm before so pretty surprised that this deal was almost silent.
