Backcountry Camping - Food to Have

Okay, I made a post a few days ago about finding camping in Yellowstone, now that my friends and I have decided that we'll go into the backcountry and camp, what types of food should we bring in?

I have some dietary restrictions so no grains for me, I'm going to bring a fuck ton of Raw Revolution bars but I can't live off of those. We will bring bread for my two friends to eat, but what else would be easy enough to bring along that won't spoil?

throw the no grain shit out the window and live off clif bars and raw flesh from any animals you are able to capture

I'm talking about the grains you mentioned, not the meat. I get sick as fuck from grains.

Yea op, I like to kill the ewoks as they have really good thigh meet. They also have really good coats which can be made into super nice rain jackets.
 
I would suggest spagetti noodles, because they are all I eat backpacking. super filling and light, but no grain....

ur gunna die.
 
Are you Celiac? If so, you can still have quinoa and polenta. T.V.P is a great supplement for backcountry camping too.

they will be the bomb and you can just pop them on a stick and toss em in the fire like a marshmallow. Im sayin hot dogs the the necessity of any dope camping trip. and buy lots bc anyone will have like three each. buns aint necessary fire hot dogs are the best food in the world

I'm looking on amazon and that's looking like a pretty good idea actually, tons of protein, gluten-free, and it's light weight and makes a fuck ton of servings.

If youve looked it up already you prolly know it means "Textured Vegetable Protein." Bulk stuff like this and the other grains I listed are good if you guys plan on staying out there for awhile. I have a lot of experience with backcountry living on a restricted diet, more than I care to write in here. OP just pm me if you need more help.

Get some Quinoa. It's great raw or cooked and all you need to do is boil it. And it's a great source of carbs.
 
Some grocery stores around here have started carrying Indian food in single serving pouches. Heat the pouch up in a Jetboil, cut a triangle off the pouch and you can have curry in the backcountry. I try to save this for the last day and eat all the boring food earlier so I have something to look forward to. Also, it is Indian food, and while it hasnt happened to me yet, I figure its best to consume somewhere near a trailhead and a rudimentary shitter just in case...

beef jerky, pemmican, avocados, olives, bananas, sweet potatoes, uncooked rice, maple candied nuts, cheese, cured meat like salami, canned fish, butter, coconut oil, dark chocolate or coffee. forage for greens and herbs if you know how.

fat is a better energy source than carbs

said literally no one who performs on endurance events ever. The science is pretty clear on this one. Even fat adapted athletes can not perform near as well on fats as they can on carbs.

I'd like to see your backpack filled will all those things for multiple days.. Or do you hire sherpas?
 
i always just fill my pack with canned soup. not necessary to heat up, its cheap, wont get smashed, can drink right out of the can without a spoon and you get all the nutrients you need.

Ok, so your plan is to just fatten up your friends with bread and hope they don't suspect anything? Better sleep with one eye open and hope they don't eat you first.

It's not so much the dead weight of the can that's the issue, it's all the water in the soup you're carrying before you eat it. I agree though. Rehydrating soup packets are a much better choice.

Hard cheeses are good for camping.

I like dehydrated cheese/spinach tortellini, but as most of them are made with grain flour, you might try something like potato gnocchi. Just make sure that there isn't wheat flour in them. Some of them have it.

Solid thread. I'm heading out on my first backpacking trip with some friends this weekend (they have experience, I don't) and was wondering what to bring.
