So while there are hundreds of sucessful transactions through the community, we know there is always the chance of things going wrong or someone being totally underhanded and trying to scam people. While it happens very little, it does happen and we just want to remind you to cover yourselves and be smart about any transaction.

There are a few really simple things you can do to make transactions smoother and safer:

1) Check peoples feedback, if they have none because they are a new member, may be an indication to just be a little cautious

2) Get additional contact info! Get Names, Addresses and Phone numbers, Facebook etc for the people you are sending your money to. Even call them and talk direct if you feel the need, NS PM's are not the most efficient means of communication

3) Send money via Paypal as a payment. Paypal offers buyer protection, so make use of it. Just remember that if you send the money as a gift/donation you lose the ability to dispute the transaction if something goes wrong.

4) Tracking Numbers. These are key for both buyers and sellers. Pay the extra few bucks and save yourself headache. Sellers you have very little recourse if someone opens a dispute against you and you have no tracking number.

If you have issues with a transaction, all the above will help you resolve it quickly and painlessly.

Finally, a disclaimer.

YOU ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY TRANSACTIONS YOU COMPLETE ON NEWSCHOOLERS WITH OTHER MEMBERS. NEWSCHOOLERS WILL NOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR ANY TRANSACTION. NEWSCHOOLERS WILL NOT PROVIDE ANY FORM OF MEDIATION, NOR BE RESPONSIBLE FOR AIDING IN CONTACTING, NOR COLLECTING CONTACT INFORMATION FOR ANY MEMBER.

THIS! good lord, kids lose so much money this way and it's completely unnecessary. when you're buying hundreds of dollars worth of shwag, it's totally worth the extra 3% to make sure it actually gets to you.

SHIPPING FROM CANADA TO THE US IS A DIFFERENT STORY. YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR THE EXPRESS SHIPPING OR WHATEVER THEY CALL IT IN ORDER TO GET A TRACKING NUMBER WHICH IS VERY EXPENSIVE (ESPECIALLY ON CHEAP ITEMS). SHIPPING FROM CANADA TO THE US SUCKS BUT UNFORTUNATELY MOST NSERS ARE FROM THE STATES

Ohhh I didn't know that. When shipping to Canada from the states you can't even get a tracking number from the post office.

Glad to see this thread. Although most of this site is a pretty tightly knit group of skiers, sometimes we can get a little too comfortable, and that's when the scam happens. If something is too good to be true, even on here, always be cautious with your dealings. Almost every callout that I've seen could've been prevented with a little more precaution and common sense.

Also a lot of people seem very hesitant to deal with new members. Everyone was there at one point and they need to learn the ropes somehow...but not dealing with them wont help. So go ahead and deal with them but make sure you take some or all of these precautionary steps.

Make him/her ship first.

Make him/her get a tracking #

Do Not send $$ as Gift through Paypal.

Do not send a check/cash in the mail unless the product is confirmed in your possession and is correct.

If no tacking # is received...Wait until product has arrived and is in condition as descirbed.

Have him/her provide Parental info.

Have him/her Provide pics with his/her username.

Im sure there are more but if you follow these steps then you will not be scammed on NS by new members or anyone with sketch feedback for that matter.

I will usually snap a picture of the mail lady with he package I'm shipping with my phone and if the person wants send them that. Not 100% but it's something.

Also, remember, if it's a new member, you should not only get seller/traders phone number & parents phone number, but you should actually call it before sending the money.

It totally depends imo. Ship first if you're selling to a legit member, ship when you get the $ if you're selling to a new member, seems pretty straight forward.

think it should go on an individual basis like a feedback matchup. If i have better feedback then you (and from some legit members not just random names) then sorry im shipping or paying last. If you don't like it, we're probably not going to make a deal but I would expect the same from someone with better feedback then me.

Yeah I put a tracking # on shit I sent to the U.S and the tracking number is basically disabled at the boarder. So it will just say

"waiting to clear customs" the whole time. Getting one from Canada to U.S is pretty much useless..

So you all know, if you use paypal shipping the tracking # comes free. Atleast whenever I ship but I always ship priority so I dont know if this comes included.

This Facebook and phone number thing is bullshit. What on earth is that going to do in the situation that you actually need to get your money back? Not a thing, that's why we use Paypal. A scammer isn't going to answer texts, and can simply block a phone number that's bothering them. The same is true of Facebook. Do you really think I want a 14 year old kid calling me while I'm working to ask why his $10 shirt hasn't gotten to his house 36 hours after payment?

Paypal is extremely safe, and I have never had an issue getting my money back when someone didn't send me what I paid for in years of buying on NS, eBay, and Craigslist.

I refuse to hand out information like that to kids, which is why I use Paypal in the first place. What's the point of using a secure middle man that allows me to give out nothing more than email if I'm expected to peddle every other piece of personal information out after that?

End rant, I will not do business with anyone who demands any more than my email. That's how it is. That's how it's always been. If you are so unfamiliar with payment security that you feel the need to request my cell phone number or a Facebook (seriously kids? you've got to be kidding me), then I'd rather not enter a deal in the first place. That's a bad experience waiting to happen.

I will accept and use Paypal. I will ship on time. I will obtain tracking information and shipping confirmation. Do that and it will never be an issue.

I think it more refers to people who get scammed when they trade. If you're using paypal, then yeah there's absolutely no need for additional info. But when doing a trade you're basing this whole transaction off of trust from an internet website. You can't just make a callout with just someone's email. It may be unorthodox, but some problems have been resolved by annoying and threatening the scammer based off of information that he gave out.

I'm talking about buying and selling since I keep getting annoying demands from kids who want my entire identity before they send me $10.

Even still, you already get a name and address from a trade. Is Facebook really the next level of security...?

Lol

Another thing that really sucks is getting raped by unexpected duty/brokerage fees. Just last week i got a 48 dollar brokerage charge on a 100 dollar item, and then another fee of 70 on the same fucking thing. Fucking sucks

If you're a canadian buyer making a trade with/buying from an american seller, make sure they DON'T ship by ups. You get nailed far more often, and with higher fees, its actually ridiculous (i was told this by a ups worker).

IT'S A FUCKING STICKY YO!

MEANS THAT YOUR BUMPS ARE WORTHLESS, IT STAYS AT THE TOP. THAT'S WHAT STICKIES DO YO

Another helpful thing if you dont want ups to rape you for brokerage fees, consider asking the seller to ship by air. It'll cost more, but it will get there faster and without brokerage. Unfortunately doesn't escape customs though

Question:

As a seller of an item can someone ever send me the money via paypal and I ship the item to them and they scam and say they never got them item and get their money back that way? Thats my biggest concern is that I get the money I ship the item and then he makes a phony claim and says "I never got them item!"

Page 2

And that is why you get a tracking number! This not only assures yourself as a trustworthy seller who can stand by the timelines he has set out, BUT it allows you to know wether or not their shipment has been delivered. Thus debunking any fraudulent claims!
