Awkward/Funny Ski Lift Moments

The most awkward moment for me was when I was on a lift alone with one other guy. It was all good until the lift got stuck and he decided to tell me all about how he was going to propose to his girlfriend in deep detail. It went on for about 10 minutes (which doesn't sound like much, but it felt like a really long time) and I was so relieved to get off that lift. Anybody got any good stories?
 
Well my hill has a whopping 260ft vertical so the ride up isn't very long. But I got stuck on a chair once with a little kid (About 4) who was bawling his eyes out because he wasn't able to get on with his parents who were in the chair in front of us. It was just us two on it and it was a quad. The kid was pretty much wrapped around me the entire time because he was scared of height. It was honestly kind of cute.
 
When I was about 7 years old the snowboarders on the chair in front of me fell getting off the lift. So me being a 7 year old gaper I didn't know what to do so I just stayed on the lift... I was too short to hit the bar that stops the lift so I just kind of went over it and went around and they didn't realize I hadn't gotten off. I was just about to start going back down the hill and they finally stopped it. Ski patrol came and I had to pop my skis off from the lift which was a struggle in itself. I was only like 12ish feet up so this big dude on ski patrol told me just to jump down and he would catch me. Well, I hopped down and he caught me and then he fell over and it was extremely awkward. The lift was stopped for a solid 15 minutes, i probably pissed a lot of people off that day. It makes for a good gaper story though.
 
Haven't really had any.

I normally try to make conversation with people, but it seems like 80% of the people on ruapahue are socially awkward teenagers.

either the time a guy tried to convert me or the time a kid started going back down on the lift and he was really freaked out and his parents and ski patrol were trying to calm him down and the lift was stopped for like 10 or 15 minutes.
 
Once I got pushed off the bike rack on our lift by a guest and broke my elbow. That was fun.
 
my favourite moment is when the chairlift stops, and the people beside you say to their friend after a couple moments on the motionless chair ".....have you seen the movie frozen?"

gets me everytime.

why wouldn't they just let you take a lap on the lift?

That is the worst attempt I have seen at spelling Ruapehu haha I'm probably one of the socially awkward teens.
 
I once had a 20 minute lift with a guy who went snowboarding for the first time in his life. He kept trying to convince me to snowboard, because it "is way more dope dude". When we finally arived at the top, he faceplanted while trying to get of the lift
 
First day ever skiing with my friend, he goes to get on the lift and I accidentally nudged him over so instead of him getting seated on the chair correctly, he sits down, half in and half off of the chair, I tried to pull him up but ended up dropping him off the lift about 8 ft up. Felt pretty bad but we both had a good laugh at the end.

Fast forward a little bit, karma I guess but he convinced me to try the t-bar and it's one of the ones thats got the spring in it to accommodate for uneven hills. Being the gaper I was I went to sit on the t-bar and it caught one of my skis and pulled me a good 20 ft up the hill. Needless to say he was laughing his ass off at me.
 
IN the gondola at jackson hole. Me and some friends are in it with some crazy dude. He was trying to figure out his iPhone asking all of us questions and crap and at one point asked us if we knew how to change Siri to a "sexy woman voice". Guy was way nice but auper creepy.

I got stuck between to people speaking a language that was completely foreign to me, I'd guess it was german because everything they said sounded angry and they had menacing laughs

After a five minute ride I was happy to get off the lift because I thought they were plotting my demise
 
Was stuck on a six seater for 10 mins in high wind. There was an old Austrian dude on my right and then a family sitting on my left, with me in between. The old dude started coughing and hooked up a big greener, leant forward and spat it out. The wind whipped the greener back in at speed and it welded on to the dads jacket on my left. His kid saw it and pointed it out and an argument in german ensued across the chairlift.

It was awkward

What was the middle of that story? The illiteracy made it incomprehensible
 
Last year at Gore we rode up in the gondola with an older guy (maybe like mid 50's) and a little kid who couldn't have been older than 10. He could tell by looking at us that we were hoping to get the lift to ourselves (or at least my friends were so they could smoke). And after about 2 minutes of silence the older guy says,

"So we gonna light up or what?"

And we're all super surprised, but then the little kid says

"No! Please don't! It's so bad!"

to which the older guy replies

"Shut up you pussy, let's burn."

It was just so damn awkward, we didn't know who to side with.
 
Riding early season park at COP and the park lift is shared with the bunny hill lift do its just s magic carpet. Kid gets on in front of me, looks like he's only 5 years old, anyway I guess he lost his balance going up and got really freaked out. So I pop off my skis and try to help him up. Next thing I know he is absolutely bawling his eyes out, screaming making a huge scene. I think I stepped on his finger or something? Still don't know what happened. Everyone in the park is just staring at me like I booted the kid in the face and I really don't know what to do. I ended up just picking him up clicking him in his skis and just waited for the top where his mother was standing in shock. I explained what happened but she looked like she was just ignoring me so I skied away. Magic carpets: never again.
 
Going up the lift at Stevens, a pastor was up with some people from his church, and he kept asking me if I went to church and then transitioned to telling me that I need to go to youth group. He kept going on how teens need to be going to church more, then him and his church boy skiied off, expecting me at church.
 
Once I went up on a two man with this kid from Nebraska who said we was eight years old and right after he told me that he put in a massive dip and told me how he is restoring an '85 mustang.

I was a wee little lad at the time. My dad had planned a ski trip out to Vail, Colorado. We were pushing the limits, skiing double black diamonds left and right. The next step Blue Sky Basin. The chair came so fast, we didn't have time to react, the seat had blown up from the wind and my Dad fell through it, hanging like this for nearly 15 minutes. It was a bit awkward.

I was riding up the harmony chair in whis and I put my poles in between my legs. So as I tried to get off the lift and pull them out while simultaneously getting off the lift the poles got stuck and the baskets caught on the crotch of my ski pants. And the lift kept going so I just was hanging by my balls until the poles snapped and I fell face first on to the ramp where all my friends laughed at me. While I was at the bottom of the lift I talked about how I have never fucked up on a lift.
 
So i was on a ski lift and we just got on, i was on the chair with a ski instructor and a 6 year old girl. No sooner does the chair start to go up does the little 6 year old girl shake around... Before you know it shes dangling by her helmet from the ski lift bar. So me and the ski instructor grabbed on to her but after a few minutes of tugging, the ski instructor told me to drop her and she let go.... She fell like 6 feet down onto some ice. It was very sad She broke her leg and her wrist.
 
I usually pretend to speak spanish (I got called out one time, it was kinda funny), or my friends pretend to be flamboyantly gay and weird out the other person riding the chair when it's a triple. It's not really awkward for us but I'm hoping it is for the other passenger.
 
This past spring while skiing in Alaska I caught the chair up with a guy who I've dealt with through work and his wife. Being 16, I knew his daughter so I proceeded to ask him random questions about how their trip was and so on. After about 15 minutes of him being freaked about a random kid (couldn't recognize me due to gear) asking him family questions I told him who I was and we had a laugh. Bonus was that his daughter and I had a laugh about it and I got to ski with her.

Hungover one morning, going to rake out parks on the other side, had to ride up with ski school. Nerd of an instructor and two children who liked to describe spongebob episodes in full detail. I had to hurl so bad and finally blew chunks about 200 yds from the top and the instructor started freaking out and told me he was gonna talk to my supervisor. My boss just laughed because he was partying with us the night before too and was impressed that I hadn't puked earlier.
 
When I was like 11 I made this little jump next to a snowmaker (it really sucked) and I thought I got so much airtime when I hit it being the gaper I was. And every time I rode the lift ride all I wanted to see was how many people would fail hitting it. The best fail I saw was a 3 person pile up it was actually hilarious.
 
I was being a bad little boy and I was drinking while skiing and I thought it would be funny to wait til the chair swung around and jump from 10 or so feet up and straight line the run after. I jumped off early fell like 3 feet in reality and laid there motionless at like 10pm just a drunk 16 year old boy blocking people from getting off the lift :-) yay
 
one time me and 3 of my buddies were riding a 4 seater and a younger "yellow jacket" snow safety patrol guy was sitting by us. we were making park laps and he could tell we weren't too fond of the people like him that tell everyone to slow down. anyway we had a good convo and he seemed pretty chill. then a couple laps later we come blazing out of the park which connects to the side of a "Slow zone" and i hear a yell as im following my friends and sure enough its the same guy. he calls me over, asks if i was with those other two guys that were hauling ass in front of me. i said no and we shared a long awkward silence as he knew exactly who we were. he said he just rode the lift with us and i was like oh yeah and then i rode away into the sunset.

it was just a funny situation because the guy clearly wanted to snip some passes that day from some "park rats" but because we talked with him on the lift he didn't want to ruin his reputation as the chill guy he built up on the lift

Last spring break I skied whistler with my buddy who goes to school at western. Him, another buddy of mine, and I got on the lift and I was swinging my skies just a little. As the lift left the terminal I swung my skis down too far and the tips caught and catapulted me face first into the snow. Two chairs ran over me before the lifty hit the stop button. It was also one of the busiest parts of the day so the lines were pretty packed and everyone saw...
 
Light up a joint on the lift one night and it turns out my boss is on the same chair. Ended up smoking with my boss. Went from pretty awkward to pretty sweet.

One time I was skiing by myself around 3 years ago, when I was 15. The people on the lift next to me started sparking up a blunt and I asked if I could get in on the rotation, they said yes. I was having a great time, I started getting paranoid though. I looked over my shoulder to check if anyone I knew was behind me. Sure enough... My dad and extended family. I fled the scene as quickly as a could after I got off the lift. That was pretty awkward.

I feel bad for OP every time brett_fisher comments on a thread because I just have to downvote it... Sorry OP :/

On a different note one time at the Dumont Cup, I rode up the lift with Robbie Franco, he told me he skied for Head, I told him I did too. We had a nice laugh, great guy
