Average Rail,Box, and Drop In cost?

Hey! Just trying to get an estimate of how much each individually costs (to buy the materials).

***Obviously each setup/rail/box will have a different cost depending on its size and materials used, so if you could please include rough estimates of the materials you used/ dimensions of your rails/boxes/setups I would be most grateful! Pics are great too!

Setup I'm looking to build:

Completely flat yard setup

OR

Portable setup to haul back and forth to the hill at my local park

(Obviously the second will be cheeper but jw costs of each.)

Rails/boxes:

Interested in building a variety of rails/boxes of various length/size so please describe/post a pic of yours!

**I know there's already similar posts showing setups with dimensions etc. but none that I found that ALL individually mentioned cost& materials used of each (if there is one please point me to it! thanks) I think we need a thread so ppl wanting to make a setup know the average cost one will take to build.

Thanks for your help guys! U Rock!!

all i had to pay for was turf, so in total i spent less than $40 for a 25ft rail and a 18ft long drop in 7.5 feet tall

For the rail, I followed this thread which makes a quality double barrel for around $20

The end product is this:

You can make it single or double or even triple barrel depending on what you want.

In terms of a drop in, check this out:https://www.newschoolers.com/cultthread/471848/TUTORIAL--How-to-build-a-summer-setup

That guide is a bit overkill if you just want to shred and don't care how your setup looks. What I recommend doing is making the main structure out of 2x4s then using pallet wood to use for the deck/crossbeams of the drop in (ie: make the beams that go parallel with your skis out of 2x4s then use pallet wood on top of them for the boards that go perpendicular to your skis). That's what I did, and it ran me around $60. The turf will be the most expensive part.

Here's some pics of my setup if you are wondering about how to build one on flat ground. DM me if you want exact materials needed.

Depends what you make it out of but can all be done pretty cheap. Like 100 for everything. More if you drop $$$ on good turf or msnow but to frame it out, get it riding and make a durable rail not much.

My rails were like $100-150 and my setup was maybe like $200?? It wasn't terribly expensive and it is possible to cut the price down lower if you find some of your materials rather than buying them.

Dude, u rock! thanks so much for your detailed help. I really appreciate it! You have given me some ideas and a better idea of the cost so thanks I appreciate it! I didn't even think to check reddit!

Thanks everyone for your responses. I am currently making a portable setup I will be bringing to the park (since my landlord doesn't want my summer setup in the yard) anyways so far I have bummed a ton of wood off of friends and craigslist and saved a ton of money.

A few tips for people in the future checking this thread...(who are on a budget and want the majority of their stuff for free)

1. Check craigslist/facebook (and make a post outlining what you are in need of)

In my town there were tons of listings on craigslist of people trying to get rid of pallets and scraps ( I was able to find about 6 FULL sheets of plywood and probably 30-40 2X4s and various other wood scraps from craigslist and buddies on Facebook. And that was just since I started this thread a week ago!

2. Go to stores (REI, Home Depot, Lowes, pretty much any major corporation) and ASK if they have any pallets they want to give up. I've heard that some pallets are rentals (at home depot-blue ones) so its best to ask than to take and get caught with them. Ive heard it's a hefty fine!!

*although I won't be using the pallets for structural support I have been able to tear a few apart and use the thicker wood for various parts of my setup so far.

3. Go to construction sites/ ask friends who work or know someone who works in construction. I have a buddy who's dad works in construction and was able to spot me some leftover wood. Also going by construction sites and simply asking can work too.

4. If there is something you need that you can't find for free then google "Habitat for Humanity" or look for another local charity in your area that has building supplies. I couldn't find any PVC pipe for free round town, so I went to my local habitat for humanity "ReStore" where they sell a bunch of donations. They use the money made at their store to help build houses for families in need. Super rad! (way better than supporting a huge corporation IMO)

*They will most likely sell you supplies for WAAAY below what other stores (Home Depot etc.) will sell the supplies for. Often its brand new stuff too!

I looked up the prices that they charged me for the supplies I bought and they charged me UNDER a fourth of what it would've cost me at Home Depot. ( I got some big fat pvc pipes = 23$ at Home depot for LESS Than a dollar) and he gave me a sheet of flexible wood for $5 (25-30 at home depot)

**He even said they get in astro turf every once in a while (unfortunately they were out by the time I got there)

Anyways there's a few tips for anyone looking to make a setup for cheap! Good Luck!
