First of all, take a chill pill. I never made any comments, positive or negative, on your skiing ability or on your ability to use a beacon. I was commenting on the inherent liability on the person(s) or business renting out beacons when someone who doesn't know what they're doing rents a beacon and sets off a slide burying themselves or others below. Case in point the "my friend is an asshole thread" or whatever it was called from a few weeks ago.
1) Protest? Maybe. I don't want someone who rents a beacon but has no avalanche knowledge traveling or skiing in the same back country areas I am in. Since your going with a guide, they will show you proper ascent, descent, and travel skills to keep yourself and others safe.
2) $300 beacon purchase and skiing with people who know how to use a beacon is the cheapest life insurance you can buy. WIth that being said, your guide should be able to hook you up with the proper equipment.
3) I have taken pictures with my friends nikon d 60 slr. Does that mean I know how to use it? Hell no. Make sure to learn some basic skills from your guide. Bury some practice beacons. Throw some in the woods. Learn about what different orientations do to the signal. If you value your life make sure that your friends know how to use their beacons for when your not with the guide.
4) I'm not exactly sure what this was supposed to mean or how to respond. I am not very good at big mountain skiing, it is something I would really like to get better at though. Being a good skier does not mean you know how to use a beacon or understand the science of the snow and vice versa. Thats sick that you are going with a guide, I hope to do the same one day in Alaska or BC if I ever have the money.
