Autistic kid gets voted out of kindergarten

Just saw this on CNN.

This is so messed up I don't even know where to start.

The

basics: Alex, a 5 year old boy "who is in the process of being

diagnosed with autism," specifically Asperger's syndrome, was voted out of his kindergarten classroom

by the other students. How did that happen? The teacher thought it

would be a good idea to let the other kids tell Alex what they thought

of him. "Disgusting" and " annoying" was the verdict. The vote was 14-2

in favor of kicking him out of the class, so he left and spent the rest

of the day in the nurse's office.

Now, it's one thing for a

teacher to handle a "problem" child badly. Apparently Alex had some

behavioral issues, and it sounds like they might have been tough to

deal with. But allowing students to verbally berate another student,

and then suggesting they vote on whether or not the kid should remain

in the classroom? That's about as screwed up as it gets. Regardless of

whether or not the child has autism, a harelip or chronic halitosis,

teachers can't get involved in something so petty and cruel.

This

happened in Port St. Lucie, Florida. (What is it about Florida and

voting scandals?) Alex's mom, Melissa Barton, is considering legal

action, although "the state attorney's office concluded the matter did

not meet the criteria for emotional child abuse, so no criminal charges

will be filed." So, like, what would meet the criteria? Throwing

baloney at him while they vote him off the island, "Survivor"-style? Oy

vey.

ah i'm not gonna lie i've def. thougt about this...especially when this one girl in my english class...

there is this girl in my school with assburgers (sp?) and i know that its because of her autism but she is very annoying, like she just randomly yells and speaks whenever she wants, and one time we were suppost to draw a propaganda poster for WWI and she drew like the anti-christ with a machiene gun shooting the allies, and like weird forest creatures.

she scares the hell out of me.

There is an autistic kid that I always talk to and I tell him he looks like Kanye West and then he gets really mad and storms off, but I am nice to that kid that is just fucked up what that teacher did.

uh, i just realized something.

how did the mom even find out about this??? I mean, the kid was autistic and I doubt he even knew what it all meant.

because the kid got kicked out of class, so someone would have to tell her, like the office phoning?

ummmm just a random guess guys but im guessing thats sarcasm, i hope so at least.... That teacher should get a beat down!

Sounds like the news is making a big deal out of nothing. This kid probably doesn't have autism. He probably just some annoying little bitch (we all knew someone like this in kindergarten) and kids in the class made fun of him. Waah Waah. Someone needs to teach kids how to fucking stand up for themselves and if the kid really does have true autism, well then why the fuck is he in the class with normal people.

He might be able to explain what happened. Most autistic kids start out normal and can articulate themselves but get worse as they get older.

wow thats really fucked up the parents should be allowed to take legal action cause now the kids probibaly fucked up in the head even more from that

WTF??!!!? How does that not meet emotional abuse criteria? To not only enable but encourage students to make berate and vote out one of the members of the class? There will always be problem children, or children with bad attitudes and bullies, but to do what she did is just horrible.

wow. that teacher is a bitch, and needs to be fired. if the kid is being so "annoying" he should be put in a disabled school.

That's soo fucked up. I hope the bitch got fired.

I've had classes with autistic kids, as well as was a camp counselor to one before. They are real kids, and many times can't help themselves to their actions. If that's the case, than maybe they need someone to guide them around, but still there is no reason to treat them as shitty as that teacher did. She humiliated him in front of the whole class, which no teacher ever has the right to do to any student.

I encourage everyone of every age size color condition disease to partake in some form of martial arts it teaches self respect respect for others and especially standing up for yourself. I take muay thai kickboxing and i must say it changed my life in many ways. if your a parent i suggest enrolling your child in karate so shit like this doesnt happen

whats abitch. let every kid say what they think of him. OMFG. thats terrible. no wonder the kid felt sad, she should be fired after this.

Yeah, I thought that's what autism was, like, difficulty communicated and interacting people... not shouting out randomly. I think that's tourettes or spastification

Whats the big deal with the rebel flag? It's mainly a biker thing nowadays. Most black people don't give a fuck, why should you?(sorry if your black, lol)

from my experience, the main problem with autism is the interactions these kids have with other children. i dont mean to offend but autism often can appear as just a bad mannered kid, doesnt listen, disrespectful, rude... and it is tough to have someone like this around other children. im not condoning what the techer did, and if it is as the article says then its horrible but often the media can turn a story.

ive had a class with two autistic brothers in it, one worse than the other (parents didnt tell me till after the class when i confronted them about it because i was pretty sure thy were autistic) the older one was extremely vulgar, rude, pysically abusive to othe students etc. now how much of this is due to autism and how much is just cos he was a shit of a kid i'll never know but at one point i had to remove him from the class because of his behaviour. the fact he had autism made me more lenient, but eventually enough is enough. but i didnt vote him out.

BUT maybe the way it happened was similar, the child was behaving far too badly and to make an example of what sort of behaviour is and isnt exceptable she said something like "who thinks 'jimmy's' behaviour is acceptable? do you think he should spend time in the office?". now i realise the kid was only 5, but at times they are not compatable with other children in environments like that.

i guess i just hate the media and this was another example of where they may have twisted the truth.
