i use traction for MIDI synths and recording instruments, and to edit the actual waveforms and put it all together, adobe audition. also, you will want to get a MIDI keyboard, a new sound card (i recommend the Soundblaster Audigy), and a small mixing board (you only need like 4 channels)....that is, if youre serious about it.

dont fuck around witht that shit. go for the best Pro Tools 6 LE. if you can get your hands on this is more then you need it will even wax your shoes while you work.

pro tools is the best, but it is not free and can be hard to get sometimes. But if you arent adverse to pirated software then definitely find pro tools
