SO, I may be moving to Auckland in May. I'd be working in Newmarket. I need info.

How hard/expensive is housing there? What's the nightlife like? Can I get a roll of toilet paper at 4am? Do the ladies like Americans, or would I be stuck shagging sheep? Do the people suck? Is the Flag Referendum going to cause a civil war? Would I be able to acquire the ingredients necessary to make a Burrito, or would I be stuck eating Meat Pies.

Tell me everything/anything I'd need to know before embarking on such a thing, plz.

1) Auckland housing is expensive. 2) I actually don't know. 3) Yes. 4) You're in NZ, stick to the sheep. 5) We're a bunch of wankers. 5) Civil war has already started - Waiting for Moa's and Haast Eagles to choose sides. 7) Yes, but why eat a burrito when you can have a delicious mine and cheese pie?

Check out the regionals. There are actually plenty of kiwi posters on here.

If you like hot sauce bring your own. The New World by my house only had tobasco. I made it a month 38 days before I caved and started buying it. The struggle was real. My love for spice won out over my hate for tobasco.

Idk why I feel that's important but it was to me. If I ever go back I'm loading up a whole suitcase with carious hot sauces. For a country that drinks a disproportionate amount of corona, you'd think you'd be able to get some proper fucking hot sauce.

But the pies are definitely a big thing. You get used to them. It's becomes as casual as a cheeseburger.

Ski gear is EXPENSIVE AS FUCK, so make sure you have what you need and it doesn't hurt to have a backup set of skis and binders. I never made it to snowplanet but that's right by auckland and they have some park features.

I have a friend who lives near auckland who i can get you in touch with! i will contact him and see what he says!

I am moving to Wellington next February and have absolutely no idea what I'm doing

Hope this helps!

Don't fuck around with mince and cheese.

Be a man steak and cheese all the way

Steak and cheese is undoubtedly the superior pie. However, when buying your petrol station, Mrs Macs, shit tier type pie the quality of the steak can be quite poor resulting in a sub par pie. But at a decent bakery steak and cheese is the way to go.

With the dads pies I think I liked the butter chicken best but when at a bakery I generally got steak and cheese.

I used to bring them home for my flat mates from work all the time. Got a bit sick of them after a while though.

Auckland housing prices are astronomical right now - I'd recommend moving somewhere else on that basis alone. Come to wellington! Much nicer

1. The job i'd be taking would be in Auckland.

2. What would the average cost be, do you think?

New Zealanders do not like Americans, especially NZ women.

You will find it pretty difficult making friends (due to cultural differences), also New Zealanders are not too friendly towards Americans.

The nightlife in Auckland is good, that said if you are a foreigner you really won't have much fun (especially if you are old say over 22).

In most cases nightlife in Auckland is good if your in college or of college age, but if you are like 23+, New Zealanders will think you are a creep or pedoy if you are in a club.

The economy in New Zealand is not so hot right now, so many New Zealanders won't take to kind to an American working there.

if you want to do it, then do it.. don't pass on an opportunity that you will regret.

all of your questions are kinda redundant. if you want it you can make it happen, its not that hard.

Soooo, I'm going with Sean, and found the job for us.

1. Why do you say that New Zealanders aren't friendly towards us yanks?

2. Im 27 and Sean is 28, why would we not have fun? Are you 20 or something and think anyone over 22 cant have fun anymore because theyre not in college anymore?

3. We'll be ski boot fitting. I dont think we're stealing any important jobs.

To shed a bit of light on this...

We get a SHITLOAD of older american tourists who come out here (usually by the cruise-ship-full) and talk (read: complain) loudly at everyone and skip queues and act all entitled. Unfortunately this stereotype then gets applied to younger americans, but generally the ladies in your kinda age bracket shouldn't have too much of an issue with it as long as you're not a younger Donald Trump.

In the nightlife scene, it's a bit of a sliding gradient, the larger majority of big, obvious nightclubs will be full of 16 (with fake ID)-20 year olds who have pre-loaded furiously before hitting town. 74.2% of the guys will be looking for a fight. The DJs in these clubs tend to play poorly mixed pop shite, there will be a huge queue and when you get in it will be packed to the walls with the aforementioned people, then a drink will cost you $12-$14. If you are 25+ you probably won't have the best time.

Then you have your smaller, slightly more off the main street clubs/bars/whatever which cater to the older crowd, they're usually less loud, less dark, the floors are less sticky, they will typically have a much narrower style of music, and a drink will still cost you $14.

A much better option (in my opinion) is to follow the ancient kiwi tradition of putting on a BBQ and beers at your place, in which case you can get both drunk and fed for $14. If you're working at a ski shop then you shouldn't have a problem, making a sweeping generalisation here but ski shop staff seem to be universally chill and party hard.

trademe.co.nz is the place to buy/sell pretty much anything, you can get a car and a couch and find a place to rent on there. There is the odd Nigerian scammer floating around on there but they're pretty few and far between.

The Auckland housing market is kinda insane right now, resulting in rather expensive accommodation. It's much cheaper in south Auckland (Manurewa, Otara, Mangere) but that's because this area is the closest to the "Hood" we really get in New Zealand, large gang presence, fair bit of theft and violent crime. Pretty much the only place in NZ (apart from maybe parts of Porirua) where you can get stabbed for wearing the wrong coloured clothing.

Generally speaking kiwis tend to be both friendly and very relaxed, city-dwellers (especially Aucklanders) may be initially a little bit sceptical of you but will warm to you quickly if you're not a complete cock-wallet. Sometimes our sense of humour can be a bit quirky.

Getting a bog roll at 4am... most of the supermarkets close at somewhere between 10pm and midnight, if you really really need something after that then a petrol station or some of the convenience stores are 24 hour but you will pay a premium for it.

Borty is tripping balls on the hot sauce thing, maybe Ohakune New World just sucks but your average big-city supermarket will have a huge variety, some of the locally produced stuff is amazing, try some Culley's Carolina Reaper, Trinidad Scorpion or Bhut Jolokia (workmates call that stuff "Butt Jolter") if you like spice. You can totally get everything you need to make a glorious burrito, but as mentioned, when you are hungover as hell a dodgy pie from the local Dairy (suburban convenience store) and a blue Powerade is what you need. There are also shitloads of awesome takeaway stores in NZ, we have an huge migrant population so you can get some really good Chinese and Indian. The kiwi staple of Fish and Chips is also definitely worth a go.

Also gardens are illegal.

Def a good job to meet peoples to shred with and get some deals. I would still bring an extra set of skis of the states just in case though. The NZD has dropped a ton over the last 2 years though, was about 1 to 1 now is .68 I think but ski gear is still super expensive.

That said minimum wage is something like 14.50 so not bad.

For rent I here's some idea from trademe

If you can ask your employer what the scoop is, or if you're in contact with other people you'll be working with at this point maybe hit them up.

What visa are you guys going down under if you don't mind me asking?

Sounds like any big city living where there's a college and tourist attractions. Shitty DJ's at a club, entitled college kids, judgmental old people, and expensive rent. I'm confident we can find our niche bar there that serves more than Corona (although Sean would probably be OK with living off of Corona).

What do you mean by gardens being illegal? You talking about my friend May Jane?

We're getting a Working Holiday visa. We get free demos there and I don't think we'll be skiing a ton. If we weren't planning on going to SE Asia too, I'd bring my mountain bike instead of my skis. Not really sure what we'll do with our ski gear then either though....

Word that's what I did. Only stayed for 4 months or so because of the northern hem winter and I got down a bit late as well. I didn't know if you were in on a skills visa of sorts. Those seem like they can be a pain in the ass to qualify though so I was curious.

I might try and go back again sometime, but I can't work holiday it. I think I can get a visa one more time through a company but it didn't work out for last summer and I had to bail on my job.

Idk, I like it there and would definitely go back. I never really hear any bad things about the country. I'm sure you'll have a good time. Solid experience all around.

Where are you going in southeast asia? I've never been let alone ski. If I went back I was planning on doing a detour but wasn't even thinking about adding in skiing.

I know you're asking questions and I'm coming back with questions but I'm curious sorry.

---------

The hotsauce thing, idk I think even taupo was slacking. If I come back I'll scout what you're working with in auckland. Idk. When you border mexico and have all of latin america right to the south it was easy for me to shred tears when I was without hot sauce.

I'm so fucking needy.

Trew, but that's assuming that whatever it is will sell in time.

If you're into mountain biking you would be mad not to either bring or buy a bike out here, NZ is by far a better mountain biking destination than a skiing one. Rotorua has epic gondola and shuttle serviced trails, you can hire decent bikes down there (although they're pretty spendy) or if you've got the cash you can buy a pretty decent used rig for about $1500 on trademe, which, thanks to our dollar being shite at the moment, equals about US$45.

Alternatively if you bring a reasonably high-end bike out with you, you could potentially get most of your money back selling it just before you leave.

Pro tip #1 for not having people think you're a pedo:

Out here "College" refers to high school (nfi why). So if you tell people you're looking to party with college kids they will think you mean 13-17 year-olds.

Tertiary education is pretty much always called University or just "uni"

Living in auckland right now. As said above trademe is your holy grail for jsut about anygoods you need.

For housing trademe is also a good bet. Keep in mind Auckland has a pretty major housing crisis on right now. This will calm down most likely about july when new houses are built but till then things are a bit crazy. Keep in mind we call people you share a house with flatmates. here are a few good facebook pages to help you find a place.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/127059894132800/

Rent is for inner suburbs is gonna be 160 to 220. On top of this you will need a bond which is normally 3 or 4 weeks rent. Dont look for a place in new market. It is literally a suburb full of mansions and mansions only. try looking for houses in these places they are near to you work and near to town/ everything you need. Mount eden, Remuera, epsom, green lane, grey lynn, kingsland, ponsonby, eden terrace. These are all highly sought after areas. The plus side is they are awesome suburbs close to town.

The snow center in new market is pretty nice. you will have a hectic time when they do their uni sale. Shit goes off the chain.

Your have a inside slope 40 minutes north of you and real snow 4 1/2 south of you.

The guy who posted a large essay above was being overly negative.

Kiwis thoughts on americans. the sense of entitlement that you guys 'tend' to have is infuriating to many kiwis. If your chill you will have a great time. Sounds good. Yeah, I can definitely see the housing issue there, but it's NOTHING compared to what's happening in cities here in California. You want a housing crisis? Imagine if those shoebox apartments in the city centre were going for 1400 per month. American. 2100$ for one of those tiny places per month. That's San Francisco for you...

So with that said, I think Nick and I can manage on what to us seems like a decently fair cost - especially being we'll only be using the place as a bedroom and takeoff point for the adventures we're looking to have... as long as we have a spot to park our mountain bikes, that is.

Yeah, seeing as I've already been called a hyper liberal in this thread alone, it's fair to say that I'm anything but a trump supporter. That guy's a joke, and there's not a real chance he's going to get elected what with how our system selects the president. He'd need to win the three most fickle states, and steal one away from the democrats all at once. I just don't see that happening.
