Both processers are good and you probably won't have any problems with either. That being said each has it's benefits. The p4 is generally better at multi-tasking , whereas the amd 64 preforms better on things such as gaming and multimedia task. Another thing to consider is the architecture , the amd chip is a 64/32-bit chip (meaning that it has all the feature of a 64-bit processor but still runs 32-bit apps very well). However the intel platform is the only one that support the new pci express bus (amd motherboards should be supporting it within the next several months) , but is not a 64-bit chip. Keep in mind , however, that nearly every application today is 32-bit including windows , but as more 64-bit processors are sold more 64-bit apps will be made and you'll get a preformance increase over any older 32-bit apps. Another thing to take into consideration is price; generally intel based systems will run higher than similarly equiped amd 64 systems so if price is a concern go with amd. Personally I run both intel and amd systems and both work great, however because amd is generally cheaper (and faster) I use amd processors in my new systems.

Here are two articles that go more in depth on the issue.

The Athlon 64 FX And Athlon 64 Vs. The P4 Extreme

Hope that clears some things up.

athlon is more bang for your buck, and they have the 64 bit, but since 64 bit isnt used very widely(not for a couple more years yet) and it is ungodly expensive i wouldnt go that route. intel has the better highend chips but once again they are damned expensive. i will live and die by my athlon

ya athalon more band for your buck. and it is more easily overclocked. i overclocked mine from a XP 2700 pro to an XP 3200 pro and all i have is a case with decent fans and it runs stable as ever.

it speeds things up, it is the same as buying the more expensive processor, however this can be very detrimental if not done cautiously

ya. my case has a blowhole fan and a temp readout (although not accurate becase it just has a little seonsor that you ahve to place in the case. i overclocked it slowley and ran 3Dmark 2003 after every time i changed anything to see how it did and it it ever fucked up i lowered whatever i had jsut changed. by the way, COMPAQ, DELL, GATEWAY, HP, SONEY, AND ANY OTHER LARGE SCALE COMPUTER MANUFACTURERS (EXEPT FOR APPLE) SUCK BIG!

co-hole basically covered it. The only thing i'd add is that AMD puts most of their research and development into making their chips really fast, while pentium tries to make them reliable. Athlon is faster, but it runs hot, so make sure you have a thermally advanced case if you get it.

not really. you can get some crappy compaq or somthing with an athalon and it will be fine, just if ytoyur doin custome make sure you know it is gonna be ok...
