Article about Red Gerard, why is the exact opposite thing happening in skiing than snowboarding?

I can only see one paragraph

Didnt realize that you couldn't read the whole thing, here is one line item that pretty much sums it up....

"The videos are more free-form than competitions and are typically filmed on ungroomed, backcountry terrain. People in the industry say riders can earn anywhere from $50,000 a year to, at the high end, over $1 million for starring in them."

Pretty surprising considering stuff like instagram is harming the ski/board film industry quite a bit.

I don't think we're going to see much growth in ski and snowboard films over the near future. YouTube/Facebook/Instagram/Snap have pretty much destroyed the business model, especially for the mid and lower tier production companies. I'd suggest snowboarding is experiencing is "flight to quality" where the brands that still believe yearly (or bi-yearly) films are heavily investing in the safest and most successful projects. Red Bull and big investors are seeing more quality in snowboarding, which is why skiing hasn't benefited to the same extent. In the short term, it's pushed a few snowboarders' salaries way up, but flights-to-quality are pretty much the opposite of innovation, as it tends to reward the most conservative and traditional companies. Over the long term, I'd expect innovation to slowly eat the lunch of the remaining production companies unless they can find another business model.

To be honest the last ski film was refresh. Anybody who paid money after that to watch ski video is a fucking chump.

That being said, i love level one, but i just think the age of paying 30 bucks to watch skiing is over. If you have to, make me watch a minute of ads before i can see your video. But thats where we are at. Ppl watch skiing on their smartphones now. Dvd is dead.

That's funny cause the 4 L1 movies after Refresh are some of my favorite ski movies ever.

New app idea just dropped from a friend in Denver. Rider uploaded content linking directly to purchasing location, the rider gets a share, app gets a share, business get the majority. Just a way to put a direct percentage of those sales into everybody's pocket, notably the riders.
