Armada ARV 106 vs 116

so I'm going to Japan in January until late Feb which is basically when there is heaps of pow pow.

Currently I only have a pair of Line Chronics which I use as my park/all-mtn ski however I need a ski that can handle the deepest pow days in Japan but also hold it's own on groomers as well as a few park laps.

The fattest ski I've skied is 96 underfoot so I'm kinda torn between going with 116 or 106. Plus the 116 has the 3D tip which the 106 doesn't. Which ski do u reckon is better suited to my needs?

Thanks everyone

JJ or some other 110-120 ski.

but wouldn't such a wide ski affect groomer performance when I'm off the pow?

I feel like really wide skis are less manoeuvrable although having said this I haven't ridden super wide skis. Are they relatively easy to adjust to? Or does your riding style change dramatically?

Personally, I hated the JJ 2.0 as an all conditions Colorado ski, it was just too soft and too turny for my tastes. That said, it was by far the most fun ski I have ever ridden in untracked snow. If I had the opportunity to ski in Japan the Magic J or the JJ would be the first ski I would grab. Go with the 116 for sure.

you've sold me to get to the 116 JJ. Thanks heaps for your insight

After your first day on wider skis you won't really notice the width on groomers/cat tracks anyway, so don't let that hold you back from getting the best ski for the powder. Have fun in Japan my dude

Wider skis are gonna be a little slower edge to edge on the groomers but you wont notice a huge difference. Also your going from a full camber ski to something that is most likely gonna be a combination of rocker and camber. I would really recommend something in the 115-122 underfoot if your going to Japan. If you wanna stay safe then go with something around 115. Look at the head kore 115, fischer ranger 115, armada arv 116 (jj). Kores are gonna be the stiffest and the others are gonna be a little more on the playful side.

I live in Japan at the moment and I've been riding Pettitors as my everyday ski (122 underfoot) with no issues. It snows very consistently here, so you shouldn't run into any ice, and you'll find that fat skis are surprisingly easy to ride on groomers once you're used to it. I'd recommend the 116s over the 106.
