NS what the fuck? I know this isn't the only thread on this which makes it that much worse.

but seriously thats really gay, advertisements on skiing and other outdoorsy stuff is fine but thats is gay.

I THINK it has something to do with your borwsing history, rather than it being NS' choice

hmm, NS might of signed a contract to get adds for more money possibly. What people don't understand is that they should donate money i guess. But I don't really notice them and it doesn't bother me when I see them, since they are on every site, so i think its free money for ns.... BUT to everyone who complains who doesn't have a $ sign beside their name, DONATEEEEEEE.

But I am very interested in what admins/ Bishop says about it..

hmm.. well than that could be it. I'm not sure how the ads are designed but I've never got them before. But here are some more...

Yeah i've never had any of that stuff.

Based on that alone, i'd say it is to do with browsing history/behaviour.

imgetting CONGRATULATIONS YOU ARE THE 1,000,000 TH Visitor, Win a free iphone, and all kinds of spam, not looking good.

yea i just came here to see if there were any threads about some of the ads ive seen before i made one myself

i dont mind though really but i like skiing ads more

i definately think it has to do with your ISP / Zip Code, ive been getting, INSURANCE IN MADISON WI ads, and all kinds or Chicago related stuff, looks like its google ads or some kind of refferel pay site ad server

right now its studio 411 and puzzle pirates...

studio 411 thats fair, ill even click that one and check it out add revenues are good, you guys have got to eat, puzzle pirates, i will never look into that now, purely from spite...

I never get anything like that.

But i get a lot of blank ad spots at the top....some pages they load, some they dont.

I've been messing around with a few ways to make extra revenue for the site. I assume that these have just come from one of the ad networks that we're using to sell our extra ad inventory... hmmmm.... I'm going to look into it and figure out whats going down.

This does bring up a point though, as a free website Newschoolers does need to pursue other options when ski companies fall short. The ski companies that advertise with us are amazing, and they are the ones that you guys should be supporting to show that their ads are effective.

I know that many people want to donate, and the ability to contribute to the site will be back soon but you've got to realise that its really small amounts of money. Its wicked that you guys love this site so much, but to replace ads on the site it would cost each of you monthly/yearly fees... and really I don't want to go there.

Something that would be great is that each and every one of you should talk to your local reps, team riders, marketing manages (ski companies or resorts) and let them know day in and day out that they are insane if they're not spending a decent portion of their ad budgets here. There's such huge quantities of money locked up in print media, and so little that comes to websites. Its crazy espeically considering the amount of time most of you spend on here!

Would you guys be down to do something like print off a little card that you give to the shop where you buy things? We could make it so that they pass the cards upwards to the companies and prove that people find out about products on here... I dunno maybe thats a stupid idea but we need more support.

Are you guys totally opposed to ads that aren't skiing related? Is it just the silly ads that we all see on torrent sites that are the problem, or is the larger problem that you don't want anything but skiing ads?

Diversifying the types of ads we can put on the site allows us to expand our ad networks and pull dollars from other industries. At a certain point we're going to have to make a decision between scaling NS way back, or having some of these types of ads on here. I personally would like to try them and see what we can do with it.... but thats me.

I'd of course prefer if the non-ski ads were more like banger corporate shit, which is the eventual goal... You know like Wendys or Toyota and shit like that. I'll find out where the ads in this thread are coming from and let you guys know.

Yeah but it would get rid of a lot of cool people too.... I really personally hate the idea of monthly fees, and have never even considered it an option.

Its a scam. I typed in my info and I got an email from Ski_Unit_19...totally not cool mang

well, i guess drawing the line somewhere is a good idea.

like, if the company that will write my name in glitter and fuck up my computer with spy ware is about to drive a dump truck full of benjamins to your front door... then yes

if youre just making as much as the nice, relevant, not advertising sex with girls that are probially over weight, ski adds, then just go for more ski adds,

ski companies would be out of their minds to not advertise with you guys if they had the means...this website is a ski magazine that renews its adds every ten seconds.

I couldn't agree with this statement more... but you'd be amazed at how many companies don't advertise with us. I mean watch the ads, there's some big players with zero representation on here. Time and time again I will say there's a huge shoutout to our current advertisers, because they believe in what we do here, and they get it that this site is rapidly becoming the largest hub for freeskiing on the planet.

In terms of the ads vs. revenue... the way I've looked at it is that if an ad sucks, but it generates enough revenue that we can do really cool shit with the site then we've got to consider letting it ride. However, as I'm finding out more and more, this is rarely the case.

Many of those ads have been blocked now, as yeah you guys probably aren't going to interact with them, probably don't care, and are more likely to leave the site than accept the ads. There will be some ads that are a little less cheesy, but this is going to be a process over time. We'll get 'er figured out.

We need to spread the word of this site... we need upper management of any ski company there is to realise that they're letting the best ad opportunity ever slip through their fingers...

I'm surprised Oakley isnt on here, they usually know whats up and I think they'd make some rad ad's.

Very intriguing. Not making members pay for a subscription, but if you want ads-free surfing than you could pay a subscription. Not a bad idea.

I personally hate seeing these types of cheesy ass lame ads (like the pictures you guys all posted in this thread). Its so bad. It makes NS look so fucking tacky.

It's interesting looking at the team updates section, compared to paid advertising which is far more visible...

Most, if not all prominent ski companies are keen to put forward frequent updates on the site, they know that the updates get read by many of the members, and that the members get stoked!! There are PLENTY of occasions i've seen a team update with new gear being advertised, and the comments are along the lines of "I'm getting a pair of those next year"..So CLEARLY team updates are useful from a company marketing point of view.

The question arises

Do companies realise this?

Assuming they do, why not get prominent banners on the site? Is is because they can't justify the cost, because they see online advertising as an unreliable medium, hard to measure it's effectiveness (Is the cost based on clicks?), or are they unaware that NS even offers paid advertising space?

But I completely agree, it's totally logical for companies to advertise here.. Unsure of the readership, but consider the cost of a full page ad in freeskier and powder for ONE month..Then compare that to the cost of having a banner displayed at the top of this page for 12 months..with 100,000 kids seeing it..

GAH I'm starting too seem them today too....and french ones. I don't browse online for anything except ski stuff. Maybe that french website with the 08-09 skis...?

If you're not getting ads it's probably because your firewall is blocking them. Alot of them have that ability now and have gotten fairly good at it. Whenever I'm on a friends computer without his ad blocking setup right and I go on NS its always weird to see the ads again.
