Are you in High school? Wanna ski for community service hours?

If you're a current high school student and have a solid foundation in skiing or boarding, consider joining the Cypress Junior Ski Patrol Program! It's a volunteer program that gives you an introduction to ski patrolling, through hands-on experience on the mountain working alongside certified patrollers.

You learn everything from practical first aid, how to take weather readings, to safely transport people in a sled and rappel from lifts by yourself. You're skiing with your friends while getting volunteer hours! Best of all, you get a free seasons pass, discounts for food, and skip loooong lift lines when you're on duty. Once the program is over usually around 3, you're free to ski the mountain all you want. At the end of the season our group had a backcountry booter-sesh, where we brought up BBQ's and had a sick party with all the patrollers.

This year there is a 100 hour commitment required, but that's through the entire season. (Generally this adds up to about 2 weekends a month). I did it two years ago, and it was a really awesome experience where I learned a lot of useful skills and gained the confidence to act calmly in emergency situations. I even used it at Grouse when a kid in front of me broke his collarbone and I helped ski patrol there package him and transport him out, so it's a great skill set to have.

If you're interested, Fax in an application form (available here: http://cypressmountain.com/employment) attn'd to Annelie @ Junior Ski Patrol. When you make the position selection, check Ski/Board Patrol, cross it out and underneath write Junior Ski Patrol. The application is due November 5th so get on it. Hope to shred some pow with you guys this year!

Dammit... I would so do this but I just got a volunteer job at grouse doing the ski wee. I would way rather do this though because it is way more practical and teaches you more. Then again I can bus to grouse whereas cypress is a little harder to go to.

wow thanks for posting this, im defiantly interested in it and will probably sign up if i dont have too many other things going on this season, dope

Be in front of Tim Hortons at Richmond Centre by 7am.

$12 (possible free pass with the volunteer service?)

Haha, Richmond is even further for me. I'm in North Van, but I can't drive so i guess I'll probably be bussing.

I think there's a stop in Richmond but I'm not sure. I'm talking about the shuttle by the way. There is employee pricing for us but we only get something like $3 off if I remember correctly. That was two years ago though, so I don't know what the deal is now.

If we can get enough people together chances are we can carpool/get rides off each other so more the merrier.

Woord, I didn't read your last comment properly hahah. The shuttle stops at Londsdale and Park Royal so you can get on there.

You go up when the mountain opens (you get first tracks on fresh days if you get weather duty!) and it ends around 3 usually. It's scheduled but pretty chill, no curriculum or anything as far as I know. Could be different this year though, not sure. You still get lots of time to do your own thing, so I wouldn't worry about that.

So it wouldn't be much of a problem scheduling around weekend soccer games? Also my friend has a job saturdays, would it be possible to just do sundays or something like that?

I am going to fill out an application when i get a chance - what number do i fax it to? and is there an easier way to do like scan it to my computer and email it?

Cypress Mountain employment fax number: 604.926.9441

I was specifically told we have to fax it, but you could try emailing it. Usually your school will have Fax, so you can send it through them.

Qman - I'm not sure if you could do it around soccer games, cause you have to be up there at 8:30-9:00am and you can usually get back at around 4 or 5 depending on which bus you take. It might work if you can get rides down. You can see the bus schedule here: http://cypresscoachlines.com/site/?page_id=3

Your friend should be fine, I did Sundays only last year.

I think I could get it to work because half my games I need to be at the field in North Van at 3:45 but I could get a ride straight from the mountain. A bunch of the other games are on friday nights too. So if I could schedule it for just those weekends, or only the sundays for the other weekends would that work?

As long as you can get the required hours you'll probably be fine, regardless of how you schedule it as long as you can do 4 days a Month.
