Are You Buying A Pass?

Forgive me if this is a redundant thread, been a little behind on NS stuff, haha!

Anyways, I’m seriously considering buying a season pass this year. If resorts are limiting sales, doesn’t that mean that lift lines will be short and that lodges (if accessible) will be less packed?

I feel like COVID may have subtly given a gift to the midweek / night shredders… maybe even the weekend warriors too.

What do you all think?

Thats an interesting way to look at it, I like it. I think I'm gonna get a pass at a local mountain near my school since theres no college pass this year around me. The place has night skiing tho so I'm pumped for after classes this year

Purchased our passes a couple months ago, smaller local hill less driven by tourism so hopefully it will all work out and we'll get many days (and nights) in and have a nice long season.

Definitely the skiing is worth it and supposed to be El Niño year

La Niña is in effect going into fall and winter this year.

I feel like COVID will drive season pass sales higher this year with most mountains giving priority to season pass holders if they need to place restrictions.

I got mine and it seems like the season will be the same this year in Utah. where i live (provo) most things are normal just with masks. I could see them limiting people on the mountain but also could see it being normal. however i really don’t know and cases going up a lot rn

Wont buy a pass this year. Gonna flex on y’all and act all cocky. Getting free season passes for 7 different ski lifts this season.

Do people on ns not buy a pass every season?

Excellent point, I should've prefaced this all by saying that my wife and I got married 3 years ago, and for the first few married winters, our budget was little thin, haha! But I can afford to do this year, so I think I am going to do it. I used to buy every season, minus the last few.

I ski with a mask on most of the winter anyway because of the icy winds, so i bought my pass, and i personally will be doing the same thing as always. I'm interested to see what the crowd will be like. Or if the high school racing season gets cancelled.

You're giving me flashbacks to the racing team snaking thru the park on Wednesday nights at Snoqualmie.... hahaha

YEah fuck it I got Ikon and Abasin because my schedule is gonna let me ski whenever I want this winter. I just hope to god things dont get fucked up. I am even pushing a shoulder surgery out to ski this year so I really hope it pans out.

I bought an Ikon for weekdays, and I get a free pass to the mountain I work at on weekends. Hopefully it won't be too hard to reserve weekday skiing at resorts on the east.

I agree. I pulled the trigger!

Still way up in Northern California. Working on Shasta Lake as a service technician. I'm moving to Kalispell, MT here in November. Bought my season pass for Whitefish. I couldn't be more stoked and excited for the big move.

Nice.

I moved to Vancouver from the Bay Area over the summer and am pumped to be three hours closer to skiing and two hours closer to world-class skiing up at Whistler.

Every year is gonna be the big snow year, but I have a pass regardless. Hope it dumps. If not I'm down with low crowds and spring conditions.

Hell yeah dude. Vancouver is stupid expensive no?

Compared to 99% of the world yes, compared to the Bay Area/Silicon Valley... it's not too bad. Probably similar to your move, some things are more expensive, some things less. Overall it will be a reduction in income and a commensurate reduction in expenses.

Bought my whistler student pass and I'm waiting to see if I get hosed or not. Need like 3 days to pay it off so whatever but I'm anxiously waiting to see what the hill is actually going to look like this winter. If anyone else is gonna be skiing whis hit me up cause a fair few of my usual ski buddies are stuck in the states or elsewhere for the winter.

Too bad solitude got ruined by the Ikon pass, it was the hidden gem of the wasatch.

Probably gonna buy one and then maybe consider getting a refund depending on what the operation plan is.

I usually ski solo and I've heard rumors that some weird restrictions may be in place regarding chairlifts.

Like what

Might buy a Mountain High pass plus it has access to timberline.

Might teach skiing there and get a free pass.

Can’t decide and there’s a limited number of passes.

its okay 99% of ikoners and your rotund clown ass included will never hike the fantasies ridge and ski those shots

wolvie silver/days are still a sub 1/2 hour skin out the gate

the gates open or access out is granted still bout 70-80% of the time

Egp and the honeycomb git skied more and tracked out faster

but the guild lines/limber pines gate is still more sidesteps than most people will do

i still have free parking and access to my bros condo

and im still skiing it all on someonelses dime

so your idea of ruined

is way different than mine

You didn't have to insult me, but that's fine. I've never been a backcountry skier and maybe someday, I would be terrified in the BC this year, every tom dick and harry are gonna be out there touring, fucking up your skin tracks and skiing above you in sketchy situations. Solitude used to be so nice man, I know you remember and miss it too, nothing better than skiing fresh tracks in bounds all day.

Like social distancing on chairlifts. So like a 3 person chair can only have 3 people on it if they are in the same party. Solo skiers will have to ride a 3 person alone. And social distancing in lift lines. Similar to how restaurants are operating, but it's all just rumors at this point.

Anyone skiing in the southern hemisphere recently or anyone riding bike parks this summer have input on what regulations were put in place?

I skied last spring during the short re-opening and it was exactly as you stated. Lift lines were cordoned such that you can be side-to-side with people and singles had to go at it alone. I heard A Basin is allowing 2 singles to go opposite sides on a 4 pack but idk if that's legit or something I just want to be true.

lol I forgive you op. I am buying a pass. hoping I can just ski at night if there is some weird reservations or something IDK. pray for snow

Who did you have to sue to get that deal? Hahah

That's insane. I'd never expect that so close to a major city. I had no clue it used to be like that. You don't think it has anything to do with the insane population grown of Utah over the past 10 years which leads the nation? Or did it not start getting busy til every Dick, Tom, and Harry found out that it even existed and happened to be in line with the IKON pass addition?

IKON was a huge part of it, solitude had kind of a weird pass structure for years, they used to sell passes based on days so you paid per/day per/week so you could have a pass that only worked on monday and tuesday, but I think they did away with that a few years ago. I got my first pass to Solitude like 4 years ago and the lot would barely fill up on a big powder day, Brighton used to be less busy as well. But, growth in SLC and overall skiing growth + IKON pass just completely fucked up places like Solitude.

Op yes, I'd buy a pass if you're skiing major resorts. Today. With all the known reservation systems and hints of more, that could mean a season pass might be the only way you'll be able to ski without significant advance notice, depending on your resort and its traffic numbers. Some resorts have already stopped selling season passes to limit traffic (correct me if I'm wrong but JH already did right?). Weekdays might be fine but at bigger touristy resorts, that still might be an issue. Places in BFE that usually have powder stashes leftover from a week before will likely be fine and I wouldn't worry about not being able to ski there.

That sucks. I skied there 3 years ago and got the vibe that it's definitely a low key place. Same with Brighton. Even though it was a shit season for snow, I couldn't imagine it would be a place you'd have to fight for parking or wait in lift lines. To me solitude was a gem cuz all everyone talked about was Alta/Snowbird and Solitude seemed very underrated. Funny actually one of the reasons we chose to ski a day there was because it was more chill. I can't even imagine what Snowbird looks like now. Sheesh.

Yeah solitude is a great place, all of the cottonwood resorts are very enjoyable. Alta/Snowbird really aren't as bad because they were already busy before IKON pass, etc so its almost more tolerable at those resorts.

All excellent points. I did indeed buy the day that I posted this thread actually. My resort doesn't have bad weekday traffic, and even on non-holiday weekends, it's tolerable. My resort also said that all passholders can shred whenever they want with no notice needed to be given. Win Win
