Are there any openly LGBT pro's in skiing?

About 5% of america self identifies as fully homosexual, while closer to 10% identify as bisexual.

Knowing this, we know it would be a pretty big anomaly if some of those pro's you see in da movies and X-games arent doin it with the same gender?

All I can do is ask, and hope.

i dont believe 5%, maybe like 2% but maybe a lot of people in the closet.

Anyways, mods please drop the ban hammer ;-)

i am not aware of any openly gay pro skiers. they tend to be spun to am immature demographic so not surprised. also mountain towns are not fun when you are family.

I've wondered about this too.

And for the love of dudes, cite your sources, people. No point in trying to argue that your numbers are better than someone else's if you don't allow us to verify.

Elias ambuhl was acting interesting at a party a few winters back.cant confirm it but he certainly portrayed it.

I imagine there's probably at least 1. Don't blame them for not being open about it if anyone is though - it would overshadow all the other stuff that person did on skis, and its not really relevant to their career. I have a feeling stuff like this is a bit of an open secret where they're not necessarily really under the radar, they just choose to keep that part of their life and their public persona separate.

Think about all the hundreds of people on the big mountain, park, race, and mogul circuits - there's definitely an LGBT pro in at least one of those disciplines.

Would say any of the Comp-Bot 1800's (Goepper, Gus, etc) but robots are incapable of showing emotion, esp. love so that's a no.

That being said there are some unreal bromances in skiing, especially film crews (Inspired, unresolved sexual tension between Cam and Clayton)

I asked torin to prom (no homo) and he told me he doesnt want people to think hes gay because he doesnt swing that way. Its official.

It's good for there to be role models that different demographics can relate to. I'd love to have an LGBT pro skier to look up to.

Yeah but sexual orientation is so irrelevant in skiing. Why do you have to look up to skiers based on details of their personal life and not the quality and style of their skiing or even the personality they portray in their edits?

if you're good at skiing, I don't care if you're gay, straight, or overweight (The Office joke). but seriously let your skiing speak for itself

It isn't when someone who is struggling with other people being assholes to them in high school for being LGBT uses skiing as an outlet. Then they have someone to look up to that went through the same things that they are going through.

Ehh I disagree. When you're skiing personal details matter so little. No one on the mountain is trying to determine sexual orientation when they see someone in the park. They're watching to what tricks are being thrown and how stylish they are. In that way, skiing is an escape: people are watching how hard you shred regardless of what goes on in your personal life.

While that's completely true, there is also a community and a culture surrounding freeskiing that is pretty essential to participating in the sport. It'd be a big deal if a pro came out because they would basically be saying "hey, you have a place in this culture just like anyone else, its cool".

that's the point i was trying to make, just didn't have the words for it. 10/10 to you sir.

It's true that it's mostly irrelevant, because it has nothing to do with skiing, but:

This is really true. People tend to want to associate with groups of people they think they "belong" with. I come from surfing which is pretty hardcore homophobic, and it makes it really uncomfortable for anyone who actually is gay. When kids see that kind of an attitude, it might turn them off totally to the sport. But if the community is accepting and has role models they can relate to, it will end up being a positive influence.

I vaguely remember a rumor about someone near the top of the comp scene around when that ESPN article about Olympic debauchery came out, but it was literally just that one of those people is gay.

The endgame for acceptance is that no one gives a shit, but we're not there yet, and as someone said above, if we can convince even a few kids not to be homophobic via skiing, then fuck yeah! Maybe it's because I ski in WA and OR mostly, but I haven't heard kids calling each other fags on hill in years. Actually I don't even hear that kind of thing at camp, and we mostly get kids from east of the Rockies.

What is up with this weird ass theory that Gus is gay? Not that it would matter if he was, but he just isn't. dude has a girlfriend I'm pretty sure.

in reply to op...it's super weird that we don't have any known, out of the closet lgbt skiers. you would think that just statistically someone with an x games appearance or something would be...I guess skiing used to be (and sometimes still is) a pretty lgbt shaming/vocabulary debilitated community.

I agree that it isn't relevant to skiing that said it's still relevant to people.

I know christians that are big fans of kelly clark and other christian riders.

Also if you're gay/bi, don't relate to a lot of people around you on that, get told it's wrong etc, possibly get made fun of over it, it's cool to see somebody in that spot that you can relate to. Hell, the majority of gay park skiers/riders probably isn't that high. You're talking a small percentage or a small percentage. If you're not into shopping and whatever else gay people are supposed to do it's cool to have somebody else in a sport you're into.

I don't think anyone should get a fucking trophy for being a gay skier, but you don't seem to grasp what a role model is.

Alright, I can respect that. I guess I don't really view pro skiers as social role models in general. Edits rarely show aspects of social life other than a bunch of dudes hanging out for the purpose of skiing. I feel like it would be hard to have pro skiers as a role model since basically the only thing we know about them is how they ski and small glimpses of their personality. That said I can still see the side of the equation where it would be comforting to know that there are other LGBT skiers that are accepted by the community.

The skiing community is a pretty friendly community and the majority of us would not judge based on sexual orientation.. But, if somebody came out on NS (not a pro just a user) there would of course be some shitheads who prove me otherwise.

I can't remember who exactly it was, but an orange name awhile back said that there is a big name pro who is in the closet.

I think a pro skier coming out of the closet could be a huge boost for their career. Sure, they might lose some support from those who are homophobic, but look at all the companies out there today who are trying to support LBGT causes (if only to strike up business). Allstate, Nabisco, JCPenny, etc, have all released LBGT focused ads, and I think an LBGT skier could be able to find some support.

I disagree. To star the Line Traveling Circus is a huge influence on our community. Those guys go out every opportunity they can and have fun. They get paid to do what they love. That is huge! Ian Compton is another example of somebody living life by his own rules and influencing the community to do the same. Another example of a positive role model is:

It's pretty terrible to perpetuate rumors, especially of this kind.

The lack of openly LGBT pros probably has to do with the demographic of skiing in general, while we are mostly nice people, rich white folks aren't exactly the most open minded group.

When I first clicked on this thread, I thought it was going to be filled with homophobic slurs and derogatory terms. Instead what I see is very mature discussion. It's good to see despite NS tendencies to make gay jokes that we as a community are very accepting of the LGBT community. Proud of you NS.

*Action sports, and pro athletics in general aren't the most open minded group.

Hold on. Am I the only one who think gus kenworthy actually has style? Yeah he is super clean but I think his cleanliness comes with style. He's really powerful when he skis I think, Idk maybe I'm retarded.
