hi i have recently heard about spine protectors and what not from poc i was just wondering if they are really nessasary i known its different for what yo are doing but how hlpfull are they?thanks. +K for awnsers.
Fine, they don't help that mush unless you land directly on your back. POC Claims they make all landings better but that isn't particularly true. I don't worry about it. If you are looking for safety in skiing, get a mouth guard and good helmet as the two can help prevent concussions (though only to an extent).
I've taken one bad fall through a rock band without a back protector that put me in the hospital, and two bad falls through rocks while wearing my back protector that I was able to walk away from both times. I'd recommend one if you are skiing a fair amount of high-risk backcountry stuff, but in the park I think they are largely unnecessary and restrict too much movement.
I would say that if you are charging it in gnar back country or pushing it on really big jumps, spine protectors would definately be a smart thing to wear. But for the average park skier hitting rails and 20-50 foot jumps, they are a little bit of an overkill.
